Mold is made! (Yeah, I know... took me long enough)  First piece was popped successfully!  woot!

Here is what I started with.

After a thin coat of bondo to fill pinholes and then sanding the snot out of the original to prepare it mold making, here is a new one!

v1.0 prototype of the cover is being made as I type this.. Marine grade low sheen black vinyl, similar to the original hat tray board. I am deviating from the original upholstery design (seen below) in that the speaker locations built with be black speaker cloth inserts, so that the drivers can be mounted inside the box via press-in studs.  This way there will be NO visible evidence of a speaker with an out of place, modern speaker cover on the face...

I am still trying to determine pricing (waiting on the upholsterers #s), a strategy for final assembly, shipping, and the other tidy work details. I can either ship them semi-assembled for speaker installation.. or because there are so many personal preferences, maybe buy and drop-ship your speakers to me and I will install them and do the final assembly, etc. I don't know..but I'm almost there. (No matter how it gets done, it will finish with speaker terminals on the base.) These details can be decided a one-on-one basis as well.. But hey!  We are close!!

I guess, if any one is interested, we might as well start a list here.  Although I won't be ready to ship any until the end of September, at the earliest.

Feel free to also fire off comments or suggestions!!!

Wow... that's a lot of effort!  Looks great, too!!  I like the nacelle-look.

Have you thought about adding a 3rd brake light option?

Great job!

Yea buddy. I've been waiting on this one. Count me in for one with speakers and a third brake light please... Black or carbon fiber cover works for me. Now can we run the speakers wires up through the interior and not through the trunk so I can seal out that wonderful gas vent essence... Very cool...

Sorry meant to add... do you know how rare these are in real life.... Clover speaker covers from the 1970's

Thanks gents.  Hopefully this is well received!  Rumor has it that it may fit e21 as well, but this one has '2002' hand written on the base..  Plus, this one pictured below (as seen with Charles Bukowski   !?) looks a little more squared off around the speakers.  If I can find an e21 locally, I will ask if I can test fit.

I can also offer to ship them without upholstery if anyone would prefer to wrap or paint the enclosure, or I may be able to have my upholstery lady make copies of the pattern in paper, so one could have it done up in a colored vinyl locally.  But I'm not going to try and match interior colors...that just sounds like a train wreck in the making.

I think that from the back of the car, the bulges look like head rests.  -pretty slick.  And the fact that you can remove it in minutes is sweet. Although, my liability disclaimer will be that it should be bolted in from underneath, for safety purposes..

If there are mounting tabs moulded in to the base (that fits against the body metal, you could fasten it down either with double face tape or with Velcro, thus avoiding drilling holes in the bodywork.  Really nice job, Jason....and yes I'm old enough to remember the Clover enclosures when they were new!

cheers

I have a hat tray from a parts car in the garage. I will look, but I believe there are a couple of small stamped holes that, with the right sized washer, will work perfectly for passing a couple wood screws through to the wood base. I will pre drill if this is the case, for ease of installation.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
