I would love to see this too.  I only asked as I build custom model cars and one I am looking to do is a race spec MK1 Escort RSR with a V8 Hyabusa. 

 

 

Which then got me thinking if it had been done in an 02 at all. 

 

 I have a 1602 and I am unsure what direction to go with it, but my wallet got a sniff of this idea and he's gone all quiet on me !!!!

But the car doesn't weigh 4 times as much, once you have removed the original engine/gearbox and all the interior, etc.

 

GRP bonnet, doors and boot, will make it weigh even less.  Just a thought.

 

I wouldn't expect the car to be a daily driver, I was thinking more in terms of a track/sprint car.  The engine is used widely in such cars, I was just curious if it had been done in an 02.

 

What would the shell weigh, with the above spec I wonder.  Can't be more than 400-500kg ?

a stripped out racer can't get much below 900kgs. Let's say you use the engine and box (and live with having to push yourself backwards) and save 100kgs over the original. That's 800kgs - about twice the weight of bike engined track cars you're talking about. Go for it, it's interesting, but I just don't think it would be a great combo.

I'm with Nick and Toby, but to each their own.

 

Food for thought.....  Once you're done what style racing and what class would you actually remain competitive in?  If it's a random non-competitive track day car then sure go have fun beating yourself, but it's no fun to have a neat car but being left in the dust by everyone else in your class.

I'm also not sure about the whole weight issue but a local vehicle has really had me scratching my head. Late '80's or early '90's Toyota 1 ton cab / chassis running around town powered by some large displacement sport bike motor. I've seen it three times now but never have been able to flag the guy down. What I CAN see in passing is that the engine is mounted longitudinally, opposite the position it sits in the bike frame, is fastened to a plate more towards the driver's side frame rail, and appears to drive a sprocket attached to the rear half of the stock, two piece drive shaft. The surprising thing, aside from the exhaust note emanating from a Toyota truck is how well this thing gets down the road. The truck is also refinished nicely, which makes it kinda cool. I've been asking around to se if somebody knows him because I'd like to see it up close and learn more about how it's engineered.

Take a look at D-Sports Racers in the SCCA.  Most use Hayabusa motors.  One recent design even mounts the motor longitudinally and uses a driveshaft.  With appropriate gearing (good luck with diff gearing?) to be able to achieve redline, it would do pretty well.  

 

The BMW 700 weighed 1500lbs and made due with 30hp.
