Thinking About Moving To Iowa...

Lebowski

Recommended Posts

Thinking about moving to Iowa as my job in my hometown of Wichita has been getting steadily worse for the past two years. I work in healthcare in the Emergency Department so I've been looking at laid back Midwestern small to medium sized cities like Cedar Rapids and Des Moines...

Any of our 02 community in Iowa?

Anyone with experience on the hospitals in small to mid size Iowa cities?

FWIW I have no direct connection to the state... I'm looking at it for its proximity to kansas, reputation for nice quality of life and schools, and reputation as a favorable state to practice medicine (high demand for docs with solid compensation).

Any help or advice is appreciated!

Aaron:  we have friends living in Grand Rapids. I was surprised how much I liked the area when we stopped in on them en route to Papillion, Nebr. where I have relatives.  It would be worthwhile checking GR out. I have not spent any time in Des Moines though.

You know what you want, but if you're going to relocate, do you want to deal with the snow? JMO, but it sounds like you want a smaller town with the amenities of a bigger town. I would be looking at smaller college towns - they seem to have more going on that makes them feel larger. I would suggest Bryan/College Station, TX - no snow, no state tax, small town atmosphere, low unemployment, 90 min. to Houston/Austin, but then I'm an Aggie and that's my Holy-land. :) Good luck!

Right around the corner from Tom Waits' restaurant.

For some reason, I find the way he yells "box!" in that performance to be hilarious.

Good luck with your decision. I've helped as much as I'm able! :D

Cheers,

Best looking opportunity looks like Des Moines so far...

Also possibly Lincoln, NE

Anyone here live in one of these cities?

Jim,

Checked out a lead in Cedar Rapids, but the job treats all docs as independent contractors. Anyone have experience as an IC if you pay everything through your own IC corporation?

My parents are from the Omaha area. They and many of my other relatives attended the Univ. of Nebraska in Lincoln.  You may like it there.  I still have lots of relatives in Nebraska.  Dad moved with my mom and my older brother to Cincinnati in the 1950's when he landed a job with Procter & Gamble.

I live in Lincoln, nice city, new arena and entertainment district, three major hospitals, stable economy, good schools, not much of a 2002 community but the Porsche club has all euro cruise nights that are a pretty nice mix of cars and people, pair of Isettas and a pair of 2002s, one of them mine, showed up at the last one.

Will add that Omaha and Des Moines match the description I gave of Lincoln except both bigger and don't know about their vintage car scene.

I like Des Moines to visit better than Omaha, but maybe because I don't get there near as often so it is all new. Omaha had two good teaching Hospitals, UNO and Creighton.

Thanks for the help Glemon. I think Lincoln is down the list a bit as my wife is more keen on Des Moines.

I'll hopefully get up to Iowa in August to do some interviews and check out the city...

Anyone else with ties or info on Iowa feel free to give me your opinions!

Thanks...

We'll, it's official. We will be moving to Des Moines around the first of the year. The new job looks like a great opportunity and hopefully will cut down on some of the recent stress I can't seem to leave at work.

Also good will be that I'll still be in driving distance to eureka springs for MidAm 02 Fest and now even closer to events like the Windy City meet in Chicago.

Now I just have to convince my wife our new house NEEDS a four car garage!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
