engine and drivetrain Lsd Conversion In An Existing Gertrag 5 Speed Setup

I have read as much as I could on the site searching and referencing the strongest 02 diff setup on the home page, but here is my questions.

 

I cannot find an e36 LSD, but I did find an e30 3.46 LSD.  So, is it recommended to replace the LSD pumpkin in my e21 case or is it a bolt in as long as I use the existing e21 CV / Shafts?

Is your E21 diff an LSD or OPEN?  Even if it fits (which it will if your e21 case is open) you need to test lash and calculate your own shimming.

Which LSD do you have, the medium case with 188 MM Ring and Pinion or the small case unit with 168 MM Ring and Pinion ? An easy way to tell is to count the bolts on the output flanges. 4 bolts equals small case and your parts may be interchangeable. Medium case not so much.

Whoops, I automatically assumed it was from a 318i E30 (168mm small case).

In small case, the strongest is the late (6 bolt) E21.  It has a substantially stouter pinion bearing, and the spiders are as good as they can be.

 

In medium case, it's all good.
