Dashboard Removal

I have done this....as I recall be careful not to damage the threaded nuts pressed into the dash. There is maybe a dozen small bolts 10mm? And I would suggest starting from one side and working to the other. The center console should be removed as well as the glove box, this will give you an idea of where the bolts are located. Good luck with your project.

Removed one from a -75, a 1 piece. A few screws underneath. And, a few in the upper front, easy as pie after you've taken out the wind shield..;)

... and if you're lucky, removable heater bezels.

But nonetheless, you will need to pull the cluster, unfasten the switches, drop the glove box, and invert thyself.

Then you're looking for some very small nuts on studs, and other various impedimentia.

To warn you, I've pulled a dozen dashes out of parts cars.  I thing I managed to get maybe 3 or 4 out intact, and not

for want of trying.  The stupid captive studs rust, then shear off.

Hey Conserv, how about a '73? I think mine has a three piece in it, with lots of  cracks. What are the distinguishing features of each kind? can a one piece go into a '73? My car came with a perfect one piece dash in the trunk, and if possible I might install it.

Thanks, Hans.

Only square tailights originally came with 1-piece dashboard covers. And 3-piece dashes were only originally on very early cars (the instrument binnacle is separate from the upper piece, not a part of the upper piece). I'm not certain of the cut-off, but '66-'67s had 3-piece dashboard covers. I don't believe the underlying steel structure of the cars changed from '67 to '76. But the dashboard covers did make the progression from 3 to 2 to 1 piece. I've seen lots of round taillights with 1-piece dashboard covers installed: I gather that the sheer numbers of square taillight cars produced creates a large pool of "potential" dashboard covers. I say "potential" because un-cracked dashboard covers are relatively rare. But, yes, that 1-piece can be fitted into your '73.

Cheers guys.  I am convinced mine is a 2 piece now.  So I will attempt this soon.

There must be a real good reason to do this…..I have never seen a "new" 2 piece dash advertised anywhere….That's the only reason why I would want to go through the nightmare of removing/reinstalling the dash.

bmdubl02.  Yes mate, there is a good reason.  The car is getting a totally stripped to have all the shell repaired and then rebuilt.  The interior is being completely redone too.  Unfortunately, I am in the UK so tin worm is a major problem over here with our damp climate.

Once the dash is out of the car, I may recover it, as it has a couple of cracks.  It's gotta be easier to do on a bench rather than in the car !

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
