Glove Box Flocking

Since Blunt is not longer offering a flocking service is anyone else?  Is there a complete blog about doing it yourself?  I saw one post about doing it, but was not as complete as I would have hoped.  Where do you purchase the flocking, etc?

You can get the fuzzy stuff in a variety of colors & spray adhesive at hobby centers, but the "real thing" is done electrostatically, causing the fibers to "stand up" and give the results that you are used to seeing.

I bought the black suede-tex kit from flockit.com which comes with everything you need including a small "puffer" applicator. It was incredibly easy and the result was outstanding. 

 

Like most things, the key is the surface prep up front. Take the time to sand out and remove the old coating as completely as possible, and use some JB-Weld or similar to fix cracks, etc. Then apply their tinted adhesive liberally to all surfaces and generously blow/puff in the flocking. Use more flocking than you think you need and intermittently shake the glovebox around to further distribute the fibers and get everything embedded in the adhesive. Let it dry, invert and then tap the back to shake loose any non-adherent fibers, and voila!

 

I suppose you would get a better result with the electrostatic method, but I think I would be hard pressed to tell the difference.

I sent two to EIS Fibercoating in Indiana and asked for their stock grey, I was happy with it. Short money.

I used the Eastwood kit and works great. Ebay or  flockit.com may be cheaper than Eastwood, it is the same product. It is a messy process so you should do it outside when there is no wind and temperatures are warmer (spring time). I did it inside a large cardboard box. Wear paint gloves and protect your eyes. Clean the inner tray before brushing the special base/glue over. I chose the dark charcoal color but it is available in OE shade of grey and black. Follow the instructions that come with the kit.
