Thanks Tim.

finished the rear seat delete today.  while i had the down tubes out, i cut 1/4 inch off them.  this rakes the main bar back a bit for more seat clearance.  had to drill new holes in the link joint.

also cleaned out the small trailer for the trip.

downside to this was that everything in the small trailer, namely my wife's business inventory, went into my big race trailer.  afraid she will like that  one better and keep it!

yup...wings unbolt.  it is a new design from sparco.  love it for safety at track and visibility on the street.  only downside is that the seat itself does not fit me quite as well as the sparco EVO II does..but that seat would not fit in the 2002 at all.

the new evo II plus is for tall skinny people...harness holes much higher than rest of evo's.   :)

problem with the seat is that for some reason they flared out the front of the seat severely.  too wide to fit in 2002.

post vintage work....

gotta repair some damage.  i was a dumb-xss.  left hood open when it was blowing 30kt winds at the vintage auto-x.  hood blew WAY open.  crushed the center grill..time to order a new one..

2013-06-02_16-44-03_802.jpg

then started prepping for next track day.   for vintage had raised the front end up about a half inch and reduced front camber to about 2.5deg.  dropped it back down and put camber back to 3.5.

put the track exhaust back on...but ever since i put the chrome bumpers on it has been sticking out the back pretty far because it was designed for a big bumper...so i fixed it with a chop saw!

2013-06-01_17-19-13_591.jpg

2013-06-01_17-19-07_351.jpg

now it does not stick out beyond the bumper.

2013-06-02_16-33-09_346.jpg

2013-06-02_16-33-19_844.jpg

then decided it was time to try the 4.44 diff again.  last time i tested it there was loud whine on decel.  took it out and readjusted the lash a bit looser.

out with the 4.10 and in with the 4.44.  (4.44 is the one labeled 3.91..what it used to be)

long break.....been at the track racing e30'S last weekend and twisting wrenches on wife's car.   her 2002 E46 wagon was running bad, throwing CEL codes and needed a mid-life boost.  O2 sensors, spark plugs, intake DISA, intake boots, fuel filter, fuel pump, ignition coils, air filters, etc.  2002's (the model) are so much easier to work on!

106k mile e46 spark plugs..

2013-06-15_10-52-05_531.jpg

but, did get to take the M2 out for test run with the 4.44 diff.  putting one size different shims in to increase the lash did the trick.  no more loud whine on decel.  well, no more whine audible over the track muffler...... B)   just have to fix the center grill and load in trailer for track event on 29JUN.

reduced the "patina" level in the center grill.  had to unbolt the oil cooler which blocks access to the upper nut on the grill.  used a few implements of destruction to reshape the damage from the vintage incident.  while in there, i finally added the "j" hooks for side grills.....and....i had a roll of door edge guard and i lined the center grill with it.  protects the paint and fits in with the squaretail black grill color.

observations from a day at the track...yep...this car is still unbelievably FUN!!!  yeeeeehaaaa!

no video or photo evidence...though camera was on for a session, but apparently it was not.  argh.

brake vibration is gone...problem was the rotor runout.

after flailing around on the long dead R888 tires for a few sessions, i could not take it anymore.  put the sticker hankook 214 r-comps on.  immediate 3 sec drop in lap times.  massively more stick in corners and brake zones.

however...proved to be great example of suspension tuning.  i had setup the car for the crappy R888's..  the suspension could not cope with the extra stick of the hankooks.  body rolled over enough to lift inside front wheel 6+ inches off the ground and the inside rear tire came off the ground enough to upset drive traction even with a 50% lock LSD.  added a lot of rear sway bar for last session but it did not make a big difference.  i am gonna have to up the spring rate again.

got a new steering wheel on the way to the track at OG Racing.  alcantara wrapped Sparco 375.  nice and thick and grippy!  the new Momo Prototipo will be for sale soon.

the big difference was the 4.44 diff.  love that ratio on a track!!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
