BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t

Post Swap and Show Tacos and Beer at the FAQ Headquarters

    05/04/2024, 10:00 PM
Post Swap and Show "Tacos and Beer Party" is back! Let's eat some Tacos and drink some beer after the big BayArea02 Event. Bring yourself. Nothing else is needed. We have several beds, a couple of air beds, lots of couches, and floor space if you want to stay the night. Many have done this in the past. The last time we managed to fit 12 cars in the driveway and the rest at the bottom of the hill. I think we can do better than that 🙂 I think 17 is the magic number.

Help With Steering Column Cover Screws

I'm working on a 1975 2002 that was never quite put together properly.  I am trying to figure out the steering column bottom cover screw holes.  From the attached picture:  The "A" holes take what looks to be a wood screw into the top cover (?), the "B" holes take a machine screw into a bracket on the steering column, but "C" and "D" are the mystery holes for me.     Thanks, Cris

BA 2002 Swap and Show: looking to sell and buy.....

I have 4 13x6 BBS Mahle wheels with basically new tires that didn't fit under my rear disc kit (just a few mm off!) that I'm looking to sell. These are the original BMW Motorsport wheels for 2002s. Pics below.   Also, I'm looking for two spare wheels/tires, one for my e21 and one for my 2002 touring. Let me know what you got!

Troubleshoot a Tii Cold Start Circuit

Troubleshooting your Cold Start Circuit The Tii cold start circuit consists of several components. If you suspect the system doesn't work, a few basic troubleshooting steps with a voltmeter will help you track down the problem. And don’t be surprised if it isn’t always the cold start relay (CSR) - the biggest “aha moment” I had was realizing that the thermo-time switch (TTS) provided the timing, not the CSR. (Lesson learned - if the system isn’t spraying fuel long enough, check the thermo-t

Installation of BMW 2002 Door Glass and Door Components Larry Gray @2002#3  and Karl Bergmann @bergie33 (6/27/23)   A door or window component installed out of order can easily block the installation of a subsequent part(s).  The result can be wasted time, lost energy, and mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual upheaval.  Therefore, a reasonable and practical order of installation of components is important to overall '02 happiness.  This tech article will cover the proper ord

  • Freeing Stuck Rear Brake Adjusters

One of my least favorite jobs on a 2002 is adjusting the rear brake shoes in order to lessen the brake pedal travel. In principle, it's easy—you just pull off the rear wheels, take a 17mm open-end wrench, put it on each of the two adjusting nuts on the backing plate behind each brake drum, rotate the drum, turn the adjuster until you can hear and feel the shoe rubbing against the drum, back the adjuster off a tiny bit, do the other adjuster, then move to the other side and do the same on the oth

Front Strut Replacement The Hack Mechanic Way

Front Strut Replacement   Overview Okay. It's time to replace your front struts. Maybe you're doing it as part of a shocks-and-struts job. Maybe you're updating the entire suspension—shocks and struts, springs, and sway bars. Maybe you're doing a full front end refresh including ball joints, tie rods, center track link, and idler bushings. Maybe you're doing an undercarriage refresh and are sandblasting and repainting the subframe and strut housings at the same time.   W

Chillin' Louie: To Coldly Blow (Part IX: Firing it up, buttoning it up)

Okay, with the compressor and bracket, condenser and fan, evaporator assembly, receiver-drier, hoses, and wiring installed, it was time to fire it up, then button it up. Similarly, with the project itself complete, it's time to button up this series of articles. As such, this is a long piece that touches on a number of topics.   Leak detection   There's a whole chapter in my a/c book devoted to leak detection, and specifically to the use of nitrogen or other dry inert gas to

  • New Shoes

I finally pulled the trigger on a new set of wheels & tires. The Borbet's that have been on the car for years were supposed to be temporary, but as priorities shifted they stuck around. I never really liked them, and they definitely do not fit the style of a 2002..   Yesterday I found some 14x6 Mahle BBS RA119's with tires (185/60/r14) on Facebook market place and jumped on the deal. They were missing the center caps but I've got some on the way. (Thanks @butteiful)   I c

    Starting to get kinda wired!

So this week I pulled at a thread and ended up getting a good bit of work done.   I got a small relay/fuse box from Amazon and was able to get it mounted and wired.    As per my previous post I installed a pair of 120 DB air horns.  I am not sure about the town you live in, but traffic here in Toronto is hand to hand combat at best.  If you can't be seen, you can be heard.    The horns require a dedicated relay and the LED headlight harness requires a dedicated relay for each light.  I
