Just out of curiosity, why is it that Americans basically have the choice between two candidates, two parties? By now one can imagine a 3rd or even 4th political party would've come up.
Example, here in NL there are around five political streams:
- (christian) conservatives
- liberal democrats (in between US democrats and republicans - go figure)
- social democrats
- social liberals
- right wing xenophobes
There are around 20 parties to choose from for the parliament.

The again, we don't get to choose our head of state, because that's decided by a roll of the dice since we're a monarchy. :[
