Subject: What are these because I just cut one by accident....

Hey all,

In my very careful cutting out of rusty floorpans, I nicked the top of one of these lines. F*&^!! Not sure if is a big deal or not and my manual is at home. I stole this picture from Kris's resto blog ( I hope you don't mind Kris) because it shows the lines perfectly. I nicked the top of the line on the right of the picture that has been undercoated black. There is a matching line on the left side. Not talking about the shiny new brake line.

Thanks, Chris

If they are not the brake lines, they are tubes for the e-brake cables. A nick in one is probably not a big deal.

right - emergency brake cable tubes - if you didn't cut the cable inside, just seal the nick to keep water out.

What's shown in the photo are the rear brake hydraulic lines that carry fluid from the master cylinder to the rear wheel cylinders.

Personal opinion on my part, but I wouldn't risk my life, those of my passengers or other folks on the road to brake system hard lines (or any other brake or steering system component) that was known to have been compromised.

Even if the lines are otherwise in excellent condition, a kink, rust pit or saw nick creates a weak point - the line may function fine for long time, but the time at which it's most likely to fail is the point at which it's under the greatest stress, which is likely to be that moment when a suburban blows through a red light right in front of you and you're standing on the brakes trying NOT to shorten your '02's wheelbase by about 2 feet.

Not worth the risk - replace the line (and the one to the other side if it's corroded).

Original post states that he's not talking about the shiny new hard hydraulic lines, which leaves only the e-brake tubes as a possibility.

Go ahead and touch up the undercoating and promptly forget about it. No biggie...
