hey guys and gals. i think this is about my 4th post here. i have been lurking/ using the search button way too much. haha. anyways, i have a 74 02 which i am in the process of restoring. the only problem is the gauges are messed up. the tach works, the blinker/ brake/ "L" lights all work. the gauges that dont work are the gas level, the speedometer, the odometer and the temp gauge works, but takes forever to get to the middle/ driving temperature. what is goin on?
i have read about the speedo cable, but it was working when i got it out of the shop for about half a mile, then died. the gas level sometimes works and goes up and down when i press the brake...

Have you ever takken then intrument cluster out of the dash, and inspected the gauges?
I recommend that too. I fixed some of my problem swith sjust bad connections, and loose wires. _________________ 1974 tii "Mr. T"
not yet. i dont know how to take the whole dash out (one piece). i did find out my speedo cable is broken. so thats on my list of things to order. would the speedo cable effect the gas gauge/ odometer?

Reach up under the dash, by the steering wheel. You will find two knurled thumb-nuts. These hold you instrument cluster in place. Remove them, plus the speedo cable that has a similar thumb nut(but longer, barrel shaped). Push from the back of the cluster, and it should pop out. Now you can get to your wires. Good luck.

Speedo and odometer are driven by the same cable--if it's broken, neither will work.
flickering gas and temp gauge are usually caused by a bad ground to the gauges. Run a separate ground wire from each gauge to a ground point on the body...lotsa archive info on that.
If it takes your car a long time to warm up, then your thermostat is probably bad. New ones are readily available and easy to install...
Good luck, and don't be shy about asking more questions...that's what the FAQ is for.
