I went and showed my wife the 1974 canary 2002 tii I mentioned here yesterday and she loved it. It seems really clean. I found out today that it hasn't been registered or really driven since 1992. Its been sitting at the shop in a corner occasionally started and driven around. The mechanic (who I know and trust) has said he will make sure it is up to his standards before he ever lets it leave the shop. Apparently it used the be the owner of the shops sweet little machine, until he unfortunately passed away a few years back. So...his widow has finally come to grips with letting it go. I think it seems sharp, but just want to make sure I'm not being naive. The interior/exterior are cosmetically near perfect. I looked the car over and found no rust or cracks on the dash. It has a rebuilt transmission and engine with around 10,000 miles (not to sure about total miles, but somewhere hovering around the 100,000 mile mark) on them. However, it has been a while since its seen considerable time on the road. I have the engine number, if that is helpful, but being a bit of a space cadet I forgot to write the vin down. I'm 30 and already losing my mind. Yikes! I'll get it on Monday. Give me your feedback, as well as what you think would be a reasonable offer for the vehicle. Given the situation, If I do end up buying the vehicle I want to make sure I pay a fair price. But at the same time, I don't want to get screwed either. I'm still looking forward to joining the crew whether its this 02 or somebody elses. Thanks for the help.

This car LOOKS very nice. The key is your "trust" of the current owner. Body guys as sellers scare me because they can cover up so many flaws with bondo and a good paint job and/or spray on undercoating. If this car is really solid, the seller won't mind you giving it a serious rust inspection. Rust is the supreme killer of these unibodies.
Here's where I"d look:
(1) in the firewall and inner rocker panels where the fenders attach,
(2) the front passanger floor pans and fire wall, both sides,
(3) pull the back seat (both bottom and back) and inspect the floor around the subframe bolts and the shock towers. The shock towers should also be solid on the trunk side,
(4) the spare tire well and the floor pan support for the gas tank (have to get under the car).
(5) Inside the trunk around the bolts where the rear bumper attaches.
If any of these areas have fresh paint or fresh undercoating, I'd re-consider the car or drop my offer significantly. Good luck,

this is the point where things start to become emotional, and reason gets short circuited with so many thoughts, if's and opinions.
First of all, it looks like a very nice restored tii, a rare find. If the pictures look as good as the car, $10k is not unreasonable today. It looks like a very nice shop and also and it is a California car. What is your gut feel about the sellers?
Obviously, you have to drive it in order to make sure there are no mechanical problems. Take it 80 mph, you already own a Porsche, you know what a sports car should feel like. It should purr between 4 and 6, shift precisely, feel very smooth, agile, fast and responsive. Above all, by the time you are done, you should have a big grin. Now, "If there is a doubt, then there is no doubt"
I would also check the electrical, make sure all lights work, and the heater fan is operating correctly.
The hard part is establishing a price, usually it is the seller that does that, and the buyer negotiates. Bare in mind that sellers are emotional with cars too, sometimes money is not a factor, but finding the right seller that will continue to take care of the car is. If you can get it for one dollar, by all means, but how realistic is that? What is a fair price? What else with the same performance and looks can you get for the same amount? Can you get something better for $10k? 8k? 6K and so on... Lastly don't use Porsches as a gage, that's a different market altogether. _________________ 72 tii A4, 72 tii Alpina, 98 M3 coupe

Thanks so much for the info I've received so far. In answer to a few of the different posts, the mechanic isn't a body guy. He actually is the mechanic who does engine work on my Porsche. He has all of the receipts for the 2002 at the shop, because he was the one who worked on it. He says he has documentation of what he's done dating back 14-15 years. The owners manual is in the glove box, and documents all of the services. I haven't met the seller yet; however, I told the mechanic I've been doing a ton of research, and I thought the car was more likely worth somewhere in the 10-12 range. So, he said he'd brace the seller so she doesn't expect me to offer her asking price of $16,000. They are tuning her up right now, so it should be ready for a test drive Monday or Tuesday. I realize the Porsche and the BMW are two different beasts, so I definitaly am not going to compare them. I just want both of them. haha. The engine number is 2781849+, if that can help with any info. Like I said before, the vin will come on Monday. Here are a few additional pictures if they can help the pros(thats you guys) give me more on the low down. I really do appreciate the help. Thanks!

THE GOOD NEWS IS the motor number
you provided ( 2781849) IS a tii , and if the VIN
on the steering column matches - pay what you
feel comfortible with - ONLY after driving it from
very cold start, warm-up period, and long enough
(highway, then sit and idle for long periods) to
see all that your getting. Now is the time to prevent
and avoid surprises. Not when you get it home in the garage !
1974 2002 tii (USA) VIN range = 2780001 - 2782928
NOW - also bare in mind those WOLLY-BEAR-SEATS !!??
Lift off those covers and sit in the seats before you buy.
new or like-new seats fitting a nice tii willbe 600 to $2000
Figure that into your purchase price offer, and all the other
incidentals like tires, shocks, hoses, fuel hoses, radiator, water pump...
keep us posted
