FLUSH THE brake & clutch fluid NOW,
and every YEAR

...and always Double-Clutch to second gear,
even on a good day.

Subject: Check the following:

1. Clutch slave and master cylinder for low fluid and/or leaking

2. Metalastic joints that hold the shift linkage platform to the back of the gearbox. They've probably turned to mush, allowing too much slop in the shift linkage, thus making (especially) the 1-2 shift and neutral-reverse shift balky.

3. And if the joints in (2) above are bad, might as well replace the bushings in the shift linkage itself. Easy job and will make shifting a lot more pleasant.

cheers
mike

change to Redline tranny fluid - if that doesn't fix it, and you can't get around it by double clutching, re-build the tranny
