Subject: Schwarz 73 Tii resto updated 7/16/08

I got the car from a FAQ member in June 06. He was in Santa Cruz, I was in Toronto, so we spent some time on the phone and email figuring the whole thing out. Al Canuck had a look at it for me and I bought it. I had it transported up to Nathan in Buffalo who was good enough to accept delivery for me...this really is a great community.

Here's what it looked like that day, along with Nathan's sweet survivor Tii (original paint)

The PO had done the following:

5 Speed conversion
* 3.90 Limited Slip Differential
* 14" Panasport wheels
* Bilstein HD shocks and struts
* H&R progressive springs
* Suspension Techniques sway bar kit
* Polyurethance bushings on all suspension and subframe components
* M3 starter upgrade
* Big brake upgrade, front and rear (larger vented discs up front, large
drums in the rear)
* Stainless steel braided brake lines
* Battery relocated to the trunk
* Electric cooling fan conversion
* E30 325e 100 amp alternator
* Engine rebuild 10/2003

..so it runs well, stops well, pulls hard (and looks great from 15 feet)

What I really needed was paint etc and interior...the paint was really tired and many if the seals were dry, dry, DRY, dash cracked, carpet dead, E21 seats cracked etc. I went through a major wave of mod fever with all kinds of wacked out ideas for the Tii (flares, M2, no front bumpers, etc.) When I finally came back to my senses about my plans for the Tii (love the idea of a pig cheeked M2, but not with a Tii as a starting point) I decided to restore it and sympathetically mod it for comfort, safety and performance.

Drove it all summer and fall, met the great 02 Toronto crew including John with his amazing 1602 resto.

All summmer I gathered stuff for the resto, like
-clean Tii dash
-Seams Perfect wool carpet
-seals & trim galore
-Italian turn signals
-13" Alpinas
-6 series rear seats
-e30 M3 rear view mirror

I also went to about 6 paint shops, and met a great guy, former 02 owner to do the interior work. About 3 weeks ago, the fun started..the teardown. I'm not a pro, this is my first ever tear down/resto of a car. I've got to say that John has made this possible..he did a full resto on hius 1602 last year and I'm riding on his coattails. No way I could do this without him.

Armed with a digital camera, notebook and ziploc bags we started.

Motor out

The classic tear down shot (according to John)

It's solid, the only rust is a bit around the windows, sunroof and firewall (result of dried out firewall pad.)

Yes that's the remains of the firewall pad and the "wiring harness"

The wiring scares me..there are a lot of extra wires and it's going to take a lot of time this winter to figure out what goes and what stays..wish someone made a replacement harness.

Check out the custom velcro setup for the relays

What's up next...
-trailer the car to the paint shop
-interior work..Recaros recovered, 6 series rear seats dyed and trimmed, door panels restored, headliner, carpet,parcel shelf, dash....
-engine to Marcus Glarner Motorsports for a looksee (it smokes and leaks oil right now)
-header, cam and some general clean up work on the motor
-obsessing over the little things I need to buy...today's obsession was Classic lines stainless hard brake lines and rerouting the fuel lines under the car.
-studying Real OEM to figure out what other bits I "need"

Stay tuned

Here's a few pics of my interior. It's being worked on by a local interior guy who does a lot of custom work...he had a Porsche 356B in at the same time. He's also dying a set of 6 series rear seats for me. The door panels are done in vinyl to match my seats, with the same style stitching ( I know everything looks a bit dusty, trust me it looks great in person).

Kris, those seats look great. I need to get my seat done as well. What set of rims did you decide on?

Nice, I like the matching idea. Keep the updates coming!

Will look sweet with those Alpina wheels. Are you going to roll the guards?

Armond - I have the Alpinas which will go on the car but I'm toying with the idea of 15" BBS RM or RS

OZ_tom - yes I'm rolling the inner lip of the rear fenders cause my test fit didn't work out too well, I was peeling rubber like a cheese slicer.

Tomorrow I'm off to see the body which is in prep at the body shop (filling in the holes from the sidemarkers etc). Also going to the motor shop where it's going through teardown...more pics to follow..thanks

Here's some pics from the body shop. They will be getting ready to prime it in the next few days. So far they have filled in the sidemarkers (with metal) and done some grinding & general repair work. The guy doing the work had an 02 in the '80's which is cool. Not too many surprises in the car, a touch or rust on one of the rockers and on the passenger door. He recommended I spray rustoleum inside the doors etc before I put the interior back together.

BTW, the pic from Cris really helps keep me on track as that is what I'm aiming at.

Recent updates...

My IE stainless exhaust arrived. Build quality is quite good, especially considering the reasonable price. Waiting for my IE header, which I found new on Ebay for a good discount.

Subject: Re: Schwarz 73 Tii resto

Got some bad news about my motor, now that it is torn down The block is shot, pistons worn, valve guides and bearings worn, etc. The block is damaged and poorly repaired in the front. The bores in the block look very rough and are bored to the biggest oversize available. On the head the valve guides are worn and in one of the rocker arm shafts the plug was missing which would cause a huge loss of oil pressure. Even the manifold gasket was installed the wrong way.

This was all a big shock as the motor was rebuilt by the PO in late 2003 and had about 5000 miles on it since then. My advice to anyone looking at a car with a rebuilt motor, ask VERY SPECIFIC questions about the nature of the rebuild and the parts replaced, who did the work etc, and if you don't like the answers, factor it into your price or walk away. In my case, I paid too much, trusting and assuming that I had a good "rebuilt" motor. Rebuild apparently is a subjective term. Caveat emptor...

I'm going to make the best of this, source a new block, pistons etc, and build a strong Tii motor. My builder, Markus Glarner, is a respected vintage BMW builder. In his personal collection are an M1, 3.0CSL race car and an Alpina 3.0CSL road car.

More to follow from the teardown and the building of a new motor.

Had a good look at the motor today now that it is all torn down, and it's not a pretty site. There were signs of oil everywhere. I scavenged a piston as a paperweight, that's about it.

All told, the following can be saved...

Head
Connecting rods (though I will not be using them)
Crankshaft (being reground and hardened)
Cam (though I will not be using it).

That means we will be building a motor based on..

Donor M10 block
JE Forged Pistons
S14 M3 connecting rods
New bearings throughout
New valve guides
New exhaust valves
Head work, not porting per se but some milling designed to improve flow.
..plus all new bits (gaskets, studs, hoses, clamps etc).
E21 rad going in as well.

All the covers are being sand blasted and epoxy powder coated, anything that can and should be heat painted will be done.

I will be running higher compression so good gas will be a must.

The goal is 150 hp, maybe a bit more. I also have an IE header and exhaust to mate up to the engine.

Some pics of the motor...

The block which is going to the recycling bin...

According to the PO, he had the cyclinder walls ground smooth and honed..that was about 5000 miles ago. I would not recommend using whoever he used for the work...

a few more pictures of the "smooth" cylinder walls

Looking great Kris.
Sorry to hear about the hack job on you original motor.
Glad to hear you've found a builder who will do it right.

Did that motor Markus build go in a CSL? yummmm.
Good luck.

yep I think it is for his CSL...his shop is a treasure trove of race motors, Alpina parts, and he's very willing to show you around. If anyone makes it up to the Toronto area, make sure you go by his shop in Port Perry:

Life, and a terribly cold Canadian winter has got in the way of my progress. I'm hoping to do some trim work and get the windows back in the doors this weekend. It sucks seeing the car sitting there with no progress after the go,go,go of the teardown.

More to follow...
