Okay guys. The Massive rear Race kit is happening.

The rear race kit will have no ebrake and will use an 11.75" x 0.81" vented rotor (usual front bbk is 10.25" x 0.81") and a radial mounted Wilwood caliper with 4 small pistons. This kit will also fit the e21 trailing arm. 15" wheels required though.

My 2002 is stored away, so I cannot measure the size of the piston in the VW GTi caliper used for the usual old-style conversion. Anyone knows the diameter?

There will be no street kit. If you want ebrake, you must plumb in an hydraulic ebrake system like the rally guys use.

Hi Blunt.

Rotors will be cheaper at around $30usd each. Calipers are priced a tad lower than the Superlite forged. I expect the basic kit to be about the same price. I am currently looking for a way to make radial mounts at a decent price. But no solution is cast in stone, and perhaps after I have made the initial mock-ups, things will clear out. Actually, the rear kit is very difficult to design.

I have an Empi push/pull in the brake line. It's set right next to the driver's seat.

Hi Lee, have you ever seen this ingenius solution for a hand brake? Seems like a good idea, and as it complies to the British MOT (certificate of road worthiness required for all cars over 3 years old - and tested annually) then I'd imagine it must actually work. Can't think of any reason why it would adversely effect the operation of the caliper in anyway. Thoughts?

Wow. I will investigate in this system. Thanks for the tip.

BTW It is also possible to add a small cable-operated caliper. I saw one not long ago but can't remember where. This smaller mechanical caliper would be located under the rotor, while the main caliper would be installed vertically, behind the disc.

HI,
Im just joined the 2002 forum as I need help converting my rear to disc brakes. Presently, I am using e30 325 discs over the existing 2002tii hubs but im having difficulty getting the VW calipers mounted to the subframe. Can anyone offer a solution? or should i simple go for the Merlin Sport car solution and ditch the VW Calipers.
Thanks
D

You need to make a bracket to adapt the VW caliper to the subframe. And most likely you will also need to turn the rear hubs to fit the disc and center it.

Thaks for the reply,
I dont need to turn the hubs as they fit perfectly inside the discs hats my only problems is that I need to make a bracket to mount the calipers. I've made one out of ridged plastic that bolts onto the subframe but when I fit the disc i find the bracket sits about 0.5" inside the disc hat so the VW caliper bracket can't mount on the inside surface but only the outside face of the bracket. Usually the caliper bracket mounts on the inside so the bolts run through the fabricated bracket and into the caliper mounting bracket. My only problem is this fabricated mounting bracket. Grrrrrrr...

Wilwood makes a Mechanical Spot brake caliper that can be used as a parking brake. I was looking into making a set for the rear myself and this was my solution for a parking brake, but have no way for making hats. Wilwood doesn't list the part on their website, but here is a link to a site that has their dimensions. http://www.magnumforce.com/store4/wilwood_single_piston_calipers.htm#Mechanical%20Spot%20Caliper

Stoptech make one, part st-10, but I couldn't find any dimensional specs on it.

Stainless Steel Brake company also make a much nicer looking one, but they will not sell it to you seperately.

if ou gys are using VW parts and need some measurements, i need to know what calipers you are trying to use. i have every one in the garage almost.

and dont use MK2 85-92 rear calipers. the ebrakes have a severe tendancy to seize. use MK4 99.5-2005 rear calipers as you can get brand new ones for less than 200 bucks for the pair, including a mechanical proportioning valve that came on corrado G60's.

Here is an update on the rear race kit. First, it will be available in end-of-January and will be priced similarly as the front kit. Caliper will be $125 Superlite Forged caliper with 1.12" pistons and 0.81" thick and rotors will be $30 UL straight vanes. Expect a complete kit for under $900usd

I already have two persons (Mad and Henry) who are in. I will need four more before I start production. This is in not a street kit. I will require a payment before starting production and it will be the only way to reserve a kit as there is no provision for e-brake. I will start taking reservations after I have finished shipping the front kits, which is early next week.

Will keep you posted. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.

So is the caliper no longer radially mounted? What if you dont get 6 people? Have you tested this rear setup on your car already?

Hi Madjurgen.

Price is a major factor. A radial mounted caliper is more expensive to buy, and a radial mount is also way more expensive to machine than a laser cut bracket. I do not believe that guys are ready to spend $1500 on a rear brake kit. Anyway, the Superlite calipers are great, stiff and proven calipers. The kit is currently being designed. Therefore I cannot install it and test it on a track, especially in Northern winter. Nonetheless, it will obviously be tested for fitting.

Having 6 kits made would be ideal, but if I only get 3 it will still happen, but it will cost slightly more to produce.

I sent the drawings this morning to the machine shop to be turned into CNC data. Pictures of basics on this thread. That was two days ago. Kit will work with Superlite and NDL calipers.

Photos do not depict the final fasteners to be used. Rotors are 11.75" x 0.81"
I alreday have 6 persons who have signed up. I will have 10 kits made. That kit also fits perfectly e21s.

And 323i too. But as the hats have no drums for the handbrake, a spot caliper must be used. There are many e21 racecars around the world, and they will benefit from those larger brakes. There is another version due for next summer with 1.25" thick rotors.

Those rear brakes will complement the 2002 front kit...

...and the e21 kit.

What do yoou get?

What?! Will an update be available? By then I will know if I need it or not.

The 0.81" kit will do the job allright. But those who run very high powered e21s at race events may want thicker rotors, especially in very hot climates. But that kit will not fit many wheels.
