205hp was the max peak but it may be from tires slipping a bit and catching grip again. 200 is littel filtered number.

Couple pics from the bench.

Subject: 1st race - Kemora

Our first race was in Kemora track week and half ago. It was quite long trip: drive to the track on thursday, tested whole friday, practices and qualification saturday, two races on sunday and travel back on monday. As a whole the result was good although there was some trouble included.

Friday: on first laps I noticed bad vibration on main straight about 250 meters before corner. I had to lift gas not to brake the car. We figured it's the main shaft and changed differential from 4,45:1 to 4,11:1 to slow it down. It helped but acceleration from couple of corners suffered. Then we tested some different spring setups but didn't achieve much.

Saturday morning I was the quickest on first practice. Then they put the scales up and we got the car weighed - 96kg underweight!! That's how much we bolted counterweight on the floor and on the rear subframe - good thing we had it with us. Still fastest on the 2nd practise and qualification on wet track! I spinned on the last lap and a fuel line was cut as the tank moved a little. There was some luck as the leak really got bad after I was back on pits.

1st race: Pole position caused some extra swetting on hands. Car left quite well from the line but I was not able to get 2nd gear on and fell about 8 positions. In the end I just caught the leading group of 3 cars that had a tough fight through the whole race so I was 4th only couple seconds behind the winner.

I had 2nd best laptime so I started 2nd at another race. Even though I really concentrated on the start and shifting I still could not find second gear! Another race was just like the first one. I lost time in the beginning and then more when passing the slower cars and could not reach the fastest ones ending up 5th.

I'm happy as the potential of the car got proofed, no damage, some setbacks but nothing serious. About the shifting problem I really don't on which end of the stick there's more reason.

Thanks to all of you who have supported me during the project! You've really given me some motivation as it wasn't always easy to find.

This shot is mad!

http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,50/page,download/id,3852/

Huge effort... maybe next time, start in second gear - should aid a bit of lack of traction, as well as meaning you dont have to shift it in there... :-P

Great Work!

Subject: 2nd race, Botniaring

I wasn't as competitive as I wished - result 5th and retired beeing 5th. The lack of power compared to Fords maybe effected more on this track. I don't like the track at all as there's no fast corners at all. Then there was also problem with the engine misfiring on the second start. I suppose it was due to low voltage. I trusted the alternator system too much and didn't charge the battery during nights - just stupid. I'm still happy - no damage or major setbacks and racing was fun. A bit disappointed because there was a chance to be third without the misfiring problem in 2nd start.

Now I started using 2nd gear. It wasn't a disaster as previous tries but tires were spinning a lot.

For those interested here's a link to Imp-site with over 400 pictures from the happening.

Where the Fords (I'm assuming the Escorts) running the SOHC or a Cosworth DOHC head? If SOHC, I'm surprised they are getting more power. How's your gearing? Where you using all your RPMs in top gear? Spinning tires in 2nd! Too bad close ratio boxes are extinct. You need a custom dogring box with taller gears 1st to 3rd!

The "Fords" -
#1 is Cortina with Volvo engine I think its 2,7 liter 4 cylinder all home made. About 260 hp's and a alot of torque.
#2 is Escort mk1 with 2 liter SOHC. They are very popular in rallyes here and they take over 240 hp's out of them. I think most powerful na OHC's in world may be found from Finland.
#3 is Taunus coupe with v6. It's also working very well nowdays. The guy said he has about 230 hp, close ratio dogring box etc.

I also lost to the other 2002 which is much more stock than mine and not more powerfull. There I can't tell any other reason than a better driver which I have no difficulties to confess.

Subject: Season 2006 over

Hey, the season has been over for quite a while already. I finished third in the serie. It's quite good considering problems with brakes, main shaft, shifting etc. Without the troubles I could have been fighting for championship, but not this time.

I've already started some improvements for next year. I have Alcon 328x26mm brake discs for front and e34 300mm rear discs. It says CART racing on the Alcon box ;-) Rears are already mounted. Plans include an injection, probably KMS http://www.vankronenburg.nl/ Engine is dismantled and will be put back together with Skidmark rockers. Rev limit will be raised to somewhere between 8 and 9k, we'll see. Hopefully some hp's will be gained.

I will post some pics again when there's something to show.

The last post was a little misplaced so I copied it below. Here's something for starters. New adapters to use the old Superlites with Alcon 328mm discs were laser cut. Had to widen the calipers too. Still missing the center hubs. Big enough?

This may sound crazy but that's not new, you know ;-) I'm going to try making a slide throttle intake from scratch. The parts will be lasercut from 6mm aluminium. There will be ball bearings supporting the slide and teflon on the intake side to reduce the friction. We will see if it works or not.

I test fitted the brakes with wheel. Still plenty of space. I think even some 16" wheels could fit ;-) Also received the center hubs. Now I would just have to find them from inside of that 2024 aluminum block.

Parts for the guillotine ITB are ordered. I made the desing so that nearly all the parts are lasercut. That's easy and cheaper for me than milling. Still a big job and there's no guarantine it'll ever work. I think the intake manifold is the most difficult.

Head is in a shop for the Schrick 39/48 valves to be fitted.

I been thinking about my engine and how to improve power and efficiency.

I just borrowed my friend Innovate air fuel recording device and I hope to use it to tune my webers so I can get some more power.

for improving efficiency I was thinking I would follow your example and fit and electric water pump and since I do not have a thermostat the pump can regulate flow to adjust for temparature.

this is the pump and the contoller I was thinking about

http://www.cdoc.com/detail.asp?id=1304&name=

controller
http://www.cdoc.com/detail.asp?id=1305&name=

what pump did you use? how much was it?

Could I use the electric pump but still retain the stock alternator position? How could I make a smaller beltin that case?

Is that a stupid idea? ....if I'm going to do it might as well remove alternator too?.........

I remember you saying you were having dificulties with the alternator in the trunk not spining fast enough to charge the bateries?

did you ever resolve this problem?

I also just started learning Solidworks 2006 software to design some parts for my car. It's very fun powerful program! Can't wait to make some parts! Was looking at your slider desing and it looks very similar to Dave mcintire race car see here:
http://www.davidmcintyre.org/rebuild-no.html

that page has hundred of pictures and is really amazing all the work he has done!

here is a picture of slide injection on his 2.0L s14

I have used the original water pump. I just added electric motor and a small toothed belt to run it. The motor was if I remember correctly a blower motor of a FIAT tractor. It was selected from a shelf of local car electrics shop - 100 euros. Controller is a switch on dash and a relay! Of course pump is runnign all the time when ignition is on but I can also run it after engine is turned off.
Davies Craig pump looks VERY nice but a bit pricey for my taste.

Sure you could use stock alternator position if you can fit them all in. If pump+motor are remote located it would be easy. Just use shorter belt!

I still have the problem with alternator. I will try to add the speed by changing pulleys but I'm not sure if it will be enough now that I'm going to injection.

I've been drooling on the keyboard several hours looking David's page too!

Some slow progress. After 20 hours work the brake center hubs look quite good. Actually I was surprised that I was able to do it all by myself. Head came from machineshop with new valve seats installed on the intake side and Schrick 48/39 valves fitted. I already test assembled cyl #1 and checked the clearances - everything seems ok.

What kind of spark plugs are you running and what gap do you set them at?

also what is your spark advance? I heard 34-36 at 4000rpm

I've been running NGK PB8ES. I think in US they use different markings? Anyway it's like standard but 2 steps cooler. With Crane cam HI-6 system I've opened the gap to about 0,8...0,9 mm, but I really haven't noticed any difference in performace whether it's 0,6 or 0,9.

Now I'm going to KMS wasted spark DIS ignition and I'll try Brisk LGS plugs http://www.briskusa.com/ One reason for that is that the 48mm inlet valve would interfere with the electrode of normal plug if the plug is not tightened to right angle.

Yes that's about the advance that is recommended for these kind of engines. I have had about 36 degrees maximum and it's reached around 4500. It was set at dyno by listening the detonation (or knocking or pinging or whatever the correct english word is?).

Slowly going on. Slide throttle has progressed to the point that I have mechanically working system on my table. Still missing manifold because of problems in laser cutting thicker aluminum.

At least it looks quite nice. No guarantee that it will ever work.

Engine block is assembled and head is assembled but they are not put together yet. I also should receive the ECU + sensors in few days.

I'm sure it will work out quite nicely. I have raced 3 motorcycles with slide throttles.... I did not notice that much difference in usuabilty from butterfly style...there was an increse in power...

keep posting pics as you progress!!

Thanks guys! I got the trumpets from http://www.sarlinraceteam.fi/ They are nearby and they have all kind of nice stuff like Alcon brakes etc. They have had the trumpets made by some local shop.

Kalle Sarlin's own racecar is worth seeing. It's made of aluminum composite honeycomb all 3D-designed. Some INDY formula gearbox, Cosworth 4-cyl turbo engine, Ford Escort roof and outlines... (links "auto" and "kuvia" on the page are interesting at least)

Yesterday I got KMS injection ECU + wasted spark coil and sensors (TPS, IAT, CLT, crank position) so next I will be mounting them.

I bought a 318i L-Jet manifold and cut the flange part off. I will use the flange so I have places for injectors and fuel rail correctly positioned. Well I broke one of the fuel rail mounts off while grinding but one is still there. I fitted it to head and then I made the runners to be welded on. They were first turned to conical shape and then pressed oval. Still missing flange to mount the slides.

The port (or runner or whatever the correct word is) is evenly getting narrower all the time so the air should be in accelerating motion resulting high flow speed and good fill in cylinder - in theory ;-) Total length from trumpet opening to valve is now approx. 35 cm but I may have to shorten the stacks if they don't fit in the engine room.

wow! looking great! can wait to see final mounting and dyno results!

keep it up! amazing!
-------------------------------------------------------------

just one note: ( i know it's to late to change but........)

How did you arraive at your injector placement? Seams very close to combustion chamber....not seen that before.

I know it has a big effect on power.

The new ducati 999 motor places the injector in front of the trumpets. They call it "shower style" injector. Aparently something to do whith proper "atomization" of the mixture. I know that ducati did gain power over prvious year design.

"Why spray way out there?
Spraying upstream of the air inlet allows the sprayed fuel more time to evaporate for better burning and by evaporating, it also significantly cools the intake air, making the air denser - therefore, more power.
As much as 2% to 3% better is some cases."

Cooling the air sounds like an intresting theory....

also

aparently the new Yamaha 4cylinder 600cc (R6) engine has also adopted shower-type injectors above each intake funnel to help achieve perfect fuel atomization at high rpm.

so maybe the difference appears at high rpm fuel atomization?

shown below

also I have seen a toyota atlantic formula motor with simliar design of which I attached pictures.

I realize this might be a bit ambicious of a design....but I figured I bring it up! for discussion... since you ar making it......you can place whereever you want.....

If not that, what about bringing the injectors farther up close to the top of the trumpets? I remember I'v seen many m10 formula motors. And many other race motors even lemans V8's. Dave Mcyintire place his injectors BEFORE his slide trottle plates. Look at pics of schinitzer slidetrottle engine I attached below and see where they spraying fuel...right at the top! I imagine they almost did what toyota and ducati are doing today with shower style.

I also know s14 DTM engine also ran 2 injectors per runner (8total). Have you tought of this? What are the advantages of this ?

On the other hand, I heard BMW (I think) is developing a motor where the injector sprays directly into the combustion chamber! alongside the sparkplug so who know what is best really...........
