I couldn't rebuild the one on my car. If you have a functional one, I would be interested. It must operate smoothly and not leak past the seals. (for a 1973, but I think they are all the same)

Pre "Modell 71" cars use a physically smaller valve with a smaller inlet/outlet; they're all brass. Later cars have a larger valve with plastic innards. Very late cars have this same valve with a small hole in the internal "stopper" so that a limited amount of water can flow thru the heater even when the heat is turned off. Supposed to keep the heater core from gunking up.
If yours is leaking, you can take 'em apart and replace the bad O-rings; that usually cures the leak problem. They're also available new, but a bit pricey.

I just rebuilt the one for my 74. Had to drill out the flat head screws and replace the shaft seal with 2 #6 orings from Home Depot. New ones cost $100
Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I had a buddy who is an expert wleder attach some nuts to the flat head screws so I could get them out. In the process, the plastic parts melted a bit on the inside. I am going to try your suggestion on the O rings. I expect the valve won't cut off the coolant flow, but if it doesn't leak externally, I will be happy.
I appreciate the help
