Subject: How much to paint?

I have a '75 that's been painted red over the original Mintgrun. Not a great job, the green shows through behind the back side window and in the front below the bumper. I'd love to take it back to the original color, or even inka orange, and want to do a down to the metal strip job before painting. Not being inclined or equipped to do the work myself, how much would a decent paint shop charge for this work? Thanks for help.

theres so many variables here its almost comical. who will strip the car? or put it back together? how much rust repair>? what type of paint etc etc etc.
you really cant get an accurate estimate with what youve posted. im spending 10k to have all new metal hung and painted with base and 5 coats of clear. it didnt start out that way but it turned into a major project. you can spend anywhere from 1500 to 15k depending on your standards and the stage you bring the car to them in. i think the best way is to take the car to a few shops and tell them exactly what you want.

I have repainted two '02s and my '76 530. I completely disassembled all of the cars down to bare shell and refinished completely, inside and out, top to bottom, including undercoating underside, wheel wells, trunk and lower fascia. If you want a complete paint job pricing will depend on region of country, but I would guesstimate that price will start around 4K. You could probably get the outside of car done for around 2K but most people wouldn't 'cut in' the car, like door jams, engine compartment, trunk, etc, for that amount unless you had already disassembled the car.

I probably spent close to a 1000 hours on my cars, lol, but I am a hobbyist and not a pro so body prep took me a very long time, apprx a years worth of weekends. Final topcoat is the easy part, done in one afternoon along with clearcoat, its all the disassembly, metal work and prep that took so long, and of course, the re-assembly.

I decided many years ago, well, when I was a teen, that I wanted to learn to do as much myself as possible. I would rather buy the tools and teach myself to do the work instead of paying someone else. Much more satisfaction in completing a job that you did yourself. I have had one of my '02s for about 28 years, and the 530 belonged to a friend back in the eighties and I bought it around '90.

Do as much as the prep work your self, this will save you quite a bit in labor. This means pulling all the trim, grille, lights, mirror, belt bumpers. and lower molding off the car. you'll have to pull the interior panelsto get access to the trim pieces. I also recommend you pull all the windows (except door) off your 02. Your original window/door gaskets are probably showing their age, after repaint is the perfect time to replace all the old trim/gaskets. If you repaint it Inka, the next door ding will show the mint grun paint underneath it. If you strip it down to the bare metal to repaint it Inka, I hope you have some deep pockets. To see what an awesome mintgrun paint job looks like, click on the following link
http://www.coupeking.com/product_main.php?product_id=334 If you think Inka is bright, it's nothing to a ming grun paint job, besides it's a rare 02 color. I admit it, I'm an originalist, if you want an Inka car, buy one. Here's an Inka for $500 http://losangeles.craigslist.org/car/118060179.html It will need a paint job anyway due to surface rust. Notice that you often see sahara 02's repainted another color? When they pop the hood, you'll see a sahara engine bay. Just my .02 cents worth

73 Bavaria 5 speed, Alpina's, weber's, originally verona, PO repainted it malaga, (when I match six out of six numbers, I'll repaint it verona)
70 E3 2800, Euro spec, 4 speed, granada (I just had it repainted back to the original color, granada; PO had it repainted an Earl Scheib verona)

I took all trim and rubber off and attempted to prep the car. after weeks and a couple hundred for supplies, I ended up withsomething that the Paint shop described as great... for a first time attempt at bodywork. I only noticed how bad it was after going over the whole body with primer. It really shows the goofs then. I sanded the whole car and brought it to the shop. They said that $1000 to spray the exterior only, no body work... well they went above and beyond trying to make the car amazing. All said and done they stripped the hood did tons of body work and door jams trunk lid and hood lid interiors and some nice undercoating, all for $1300. it pays to show that you put alot of effort in prep. Dont forget you're gonna want new chrome, rubber, engine interior... after that$$$,
