Subject: Ball joint questions

I have two questions about the control arm ball joint installation.

1. I reviewed the torque specs on the FAQ and in the service manual and I am not clear which spec is for the three nuts that attach to the bolts with the safety wire holes. These are the nuts and bolts that hold the ball joint to the control arm. What is the torque spec?

2. How do you route and secure the safety wire? Is there a specail tool or good ol pliers good enough?

Hey,
Hope your son is well!!!!!!
my manual reads 16 ft lbs +/-, i use locktite red and a good six point
socket on a 6" to 8" ratchet handle. this is just to snug it up because
if you break the bolt in the strut tube you will be beside yourself as
to getting it fixed. make them tight, but know when to quit is the trick.
As for speed wire you can use regular pliers. the best way to lace
the wire is to pass the wire through the bolt and on to the next bolt so
that the wire pulls clockwise on that individual bolt. hope that helps!
good luck

Nathan was home on a 14 day pass, one hour after his return to country, they wisked him away to training and mission we know nothing about. May not hear from him for awhile.

Subject: Use Loctite + Saftey Wire Pliers

If you don't have a set of safety wire pliers, just find your nearest racing friend or aerospace mechanic, they're likely to have a set you can borrow along with some wire. I suppose it could be done by hand with regular pliers and safety wire, but I've never tried that.
