Subject: Weber 38/38 carb.

I have what I believe to be a 32/36 Weber. Would you fellows recommend a switch to the 38/38 Weber? I understand that fuel economy would dip, but the power would go up. What else do I need to know? BTW, THANKS to Karl for his help w/my car yesterday and pinpointing some things that need correcting! TIA guys. JIM

first off - how do you drive the car - 0-3500 rpm, sitting in traffic, partial throttle most of the time ?

or,

on track with 1/2 to full throttle and 3500 - 6000 rpm ? - that's what the 38/38 carb is for.

What's your exhaust, ignition, compression, intake manifold,
condition of steering, suspension, brakes ? Before you go FASTER - you need to steering and stop 100% and adding a 38/38 means removal of the intake manifold for machining and cleaning - to prevent metal trash entering the motor - no small task.

fix the "stock" set-up first with proper valve clearance, timing, compression, carb adjustments, and you'll be surprised with the power and scatt. maybe your just suffering from throttle linkage that's not opening the carb to the FULL OPEN STOP - have you checked it lately ?

Expect way more low end throttle response with a 38, a touch more top end power, it feels faster more than it is. Therefore much more fun to stomp the gas. Powerwise a well tuned 32/36 can come close, it just doesn't feel as good. Either can get up to 30 mpg on a long mellow highway if tuned perfectly. Maybe 27 without overdrive. If you don't have the time or effort to tune either one expect poor mileage and funky running.

Actually, I think the 38/38 is really superior to the 32/36 for everyday driving around town. The bottom end response is much better, since both valves open at the same time. You don't have to floor it to get it to go.

I agree with Tom and Stu. Low-end response with the 38/38 is much better than with the 32/36. One of the best upgrades I've done to my car...

It does lower the gas mileage, but if I were worried about that I would be posting on the Toyota Prius message board instead of here ;-D

If I were worried about gas mileage I wouldn't have sold the 38/38 and had my engine performance built with 40 DCOE carbs.

I put a 38/38 with an electric choke in my 74 2002. I love it; car's been running great for over 10,000 miles since I installed it. One very important thing to keep in mind though is the intake manifold. The throttle inlets must be modified to allow the larger 38mm throttle valves to open; if they don't clear, they will bend and would then need to be replaced. Also, a very good gasket between the manifold and carb is essential. I had my manifold machined perfectly flat to prevent any air leakage.

I had a 38/38 in my '71 and it was a noticable change in performance over the 32/36 I had in my '75. I would recommend it..and I had no problems with it for around town driving either. You do have to machine the intake manifold to fit it properly though.
