Subject: carburetion questions

I've always toyed with the idea of putting dual sidedrafts on the 2002 and am getting antzy to upgrade. I've got a 292 cam, 9.5:1 pistons, stahl header, +misc go-fast parts though i still have a weber 32/36. I was speaking to a friend about this and he strongly encouraged me to go with a 38/38 downdraft, saying that dual sides is way too much carb for the car and that i would kick myself later. he told me that i would have issues in the winter with them not starting easily and freezing up unless i somehow ran hot air through them. am i really better off going with a 38/38 downdraft? i'd like to hear some peoples expiriences, positive and negative please, with these setups. thanks a lot, i really appreciate the help.

btw i was looking at the DCOM's that are offered through the FAQ, or the 38/38 for that matter.

Thanks again,

Mike Sampson

Mike, as you know side draft webers are a very common go fast modification to '02's and a search of the archives should lead you to tons of information. FWIW, I replaced a good running 32/36 with 40DCOE's (because I always wanted to) and it has been very bitter sweet. My motor had 40K on a factory rebuild, stock inside, with tii distributor and a header. Since it ran well I assumed that everything was OK inside, and slapped the side drafts on. I've spend two years getting it drivable and will probably pull the motor this winter to do some work inside.

In searching the archives you will learn about all the little figgity things that are required - water bypass, linkage, electric fuel pump and regulator, dip stick and air cleaner clearance, mechanical advance distributor, etc. The one thing I will add is to make sure that the compression is good (and balanced) between cylinders, as an individual barrel per cylinder will show any differences.

In two years of fiddling with jets, linkage and balance it runs tolerably well. Makes great power (and noise) at full throttle, idles OK (not as good as the 32/36) and I've almost got the 2000 rpm stumble fixed. There is no cold start mechanism (chokes) but it does start ok when cold. I don't drive in the dead of winter so that isn't a problem.

I've got a bunch of information that I could share with you - a spread sheet of the different jetting combinations that are working for others, a word document with some of the problems I encountered and how I solve them, some references - if you are interested shoot me an e-mail.

Would I do it again - no. Well, maybe. Right now I'm on the list for one of the Lynx single side draft manifolds. I'm thinking that is the way to go.
