Subject: my tii idles perfect @ ~900rpm when cold, lopes(?) when it warms up

it idles perfectly when i start it up

it drops to about 200rpm and shakes the car a leeetle bit (noticeble to driver, not passenger) and then jumps to about 1000, keepings doing it

"loping" is the correct term? like, a surging idle right? i know its usually associated with the idle of a radical cam

I read this as saying it idles fine when warm, but doesn't like to idle when cold.

A slight tweak to the warmup regulator may correct it. Adjust the "tophat" nut downward a little bit to richen the idle mixture. If you have McCartney's Restoration Manual, it describes how to do this. But first, check the ignition timing and valve adjustment.

How certain are you that you don't have a vacuum leak? Possible sources are the rubber air line running from the warm-up regulator to the intake plenum, the gaskets at each of the intake runners and on the intake manifold, the throttle shaft and throttle body and the injector seals.

If everything checks out, then make sure the linkages are adjusted correctly (85mm rod and the throttle position) and the timing is correct. And then finally...

Try turning out the screw inside the tuna can a little. 1/4 of a turn is quite large, so turn it in very small increments. You will probably have to adjust the idle up as you richen up the mixture.

if it idles fine when cold, means that the warm up regulator is doing its job, as it warms up, the water temperature should expand the warm up regulator and take it out of the equation. If the warm up regulator is stuck then is not functioning properly at operating temperature. Check that you have a gap between the big washer in the back of the injection pump and the lever below first. The tii injection system is pretty staight forward but you must be methodical in your approach. Check the easy things first, before you start adjusting stuff!

i'm more inclined to believe a vacuum leak at an intake plenum gasket or possibly the timing. tommorow i'll give the motor bay the hose-to-the-ear treatment and see if i can find anything.

Or a A/F ratio meter. I found my tii to be very sensitive to any advance at idle. i'd check that first. There should be little of preferably no advance at idle. If there is no advance (and no vacummeleaks etc) then just richen the idle a little. Balacing the the idle timing and the mixture screw to just get rid of the surging- then play with it a little more to get it smooth. My car ran alot smooter at 800 rpm as the distributor is a002 and starts to advance right around 900. Just take notes about where things are and go from there.
