Subject: registering out-of-state (pre-smog) car in CA

Any tricks I need to know about registering a '71 car that I'm bringing in from out of state? I seem to recall someone posting that the best way to do it is to "trailer it" into the state, so you can say that it never touched a CA roadway? (and thus avoid having to prove existing smog equipment or something) I searched but couldn't find the post...
