Subject: registering out-of-state (pre-smog) car in CA

Any tricks I need to know about registering a '71 car that I'm bringing in from out of state? I seem to recall someone posting that the best way to do it is to "trailer it" into the state, so you can say that it never touched a CA roadway? (and thus avoid having to prove existing smog equipment or something) I searched but couldn't find the post...

just drive it to the DMV and have them inspect it, take the title from you, and your good to go. You can even do that if it is not registered, but it is of course illegal to drive an unregistered car.....

You have thirty days after you register it. They give you a temporary registration so you can drive it to a smog inspection station to get the certificate. After you pass you go back to DMV to get you license plates.

Subject: I did this with my '70

I bought my '70 02 in Arizona last summer, and drove it back to the Bay Area. Registration was simple. All I had to do was take it to the DMV (with the bill of sale and the original title in hand), get the VIN checked out, and had new plates handed to me. There really was not much to it...

like pitching the smog pump and related plumbing, added a non-standard carb or (gasp) EFI, or were running a header.

It is susposed to be there, but 1974 (1975?) and older are exempt from the inspection/test.

DMV will look under the hood to verify the VIN, but the inspector does not knpw what to look for in terms of smog. My touring, which is registered as a 73 and thus is susposed to have some smog equipment, has none and the DMV inspector did not think twice about it.

When I imported my 71 1600 Cab from Belgium to CA, I was worried about the DMV dealing with the foreign paperwork. I actually ended up using one of the Title transfer services to get a New York title and then took that to the DMV. Pre-1976 (30 year old cars) are exempt from the smog test, so I paid my fees and was told that I needed a vehicle inspection report from the CHP. You get the special forms you need, make an appointment, take your car down and they check it to make sure the Vin numbers are intact and the car was not stolen or re-assembled with stolen parts. They weren't concerned about any of the original smog equipment.

California laws are changed frequently, so I would save anything related to the original emissions for re-installation. You never know...

Just be friendly- I have passed 3 cars without proper smog.
