Subject: e30 help!

I tried searching most of the e30 forums, and all I could find are attacks on people and how to convert to short bumpers or buy ellipsoid headlights. Arg!

Does anybody have any tips on how to remove the instrument cluster, and what this "SI" battery is/where it is/what kind it is?

Thanks!

Ash,
same as the 2002 but with a little more trim. You have to take off the steering wheel - do you have an airbag wheel (i hope not)... pop off the roundel, remove the wheel, there will be a few little phillips screws up under the top piece of trim, remove that and the outer trim cover will come out. I think (its been a while) that you have to remove a piece of trim between the gauge cluster and steering wheel column - that is held in with a few nuts behind like the cluster in an 02 is held in.

re-reading i'm seeing that this is a pretty piss-poor description... you could go to a junkyard and tear one out to learn how???

Email me if you have questions - its easy... if you can do brakes on an 02 you can remove the cluster on a n e30.

Battery you are looking for is behind the cluster IIRC.

thanks!

I found a pretty good tutorial:
http://www.beckerelectronics.com/SIboard/siboard.html

this is blunt's old car, so luckily the steering wheel comes right off. I may try at a junk yard first though for fun. Who knows, I might find something I need anyway!

if you do have an airbag steering wheel, MAKE SURE to disconnect your battery first, otherwise the idot light about SRS will be flashing and then remain on permanently every time you drive the car.

euro ellipsoid headlights, BTW, are a huge improvement over stock sealed beams, or for that matter Hella H4's, especially with a higher output light source like Sylvania Bluestar. They are spendy, but the euro smileys are great looking, have a city light built in, and are first class headlights for driving at night. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

don't get me wrong-- Blunt had them on his e30 and they are fantastic. Aside from being yellow, they are really cool.

Even if you have a NON airbag wheel - make sure to have the key in the ignition and the steering collumn unlocked - only then will the wheel be removeable from the splines!

Pretty easy job - but be patient and gentle with all that plastic / delicate stuff.

2 aluminum thumb screws hold the panel right below the cluster.

I've done it 30 times.
Take our time at first.
Then you'll be doing it wiff your eyes closed.
