Subject: Piston Prices/Availability

Does anyone know of any other sources of pistions than these here?

I'm going to need +.5 mm pistons for my rebuild. My machinist says that should be enough to ensure that the new rebore is consistent from top to bottom. But, even after searching the forum and the web, it appears that most of the pistons have dried up.

I've seen posts from the past that quote about $400/set for Mahle cast pistons but I can't find those at Zygmunt, Mesa, Pelican, or others. Does anyone have any insight or different info? Is it the falling dollar, lack of demand etc.?

Does the $400 piston set only exist at Bavarian Autosport, in which case you have to get the rods honed to fit the new wrist pins?

Here's what I found:

    Maximillian $244 each

    Autohauz AZ $126 each (1977 320i)

    2002ad $595/set (tii)

Ireland Engineering $520/set (tii on backorder)

Bavarian Autosport $350/set (wristpin bore required/sub-standard rings?)

Thanks for the input

Recently, all the oem through normal parts chains have dried up.
Wish I'd bought a few sets, but then, money's money.

Ireland will have a set of Ross made for you for $600- they're forged.

MaxSil's are a lot less, with decent reviews for stock-ish applications so far.

Are you after flat tops, or what type specifically?

I'm looking for a decent, quality set for street use. Nothing fancy. Flat tops or tii, whatever I can get. If the tii ones are $50 more, then I would buy them, but probably not for $100 more.

Couple things . . . as I understand it, Ireland is working on having new cast pistons made for the M10 though I don't know the pricing. See link below, perhaps they'd have more info on the phone.

Alternately, I've got a set of used over-sized flat tops in the garage, if you don't find anything else email me and I'll check specs and take photos.[/b]

Are Ross pistons good?

And what rings do you get with the Ross pistons?

The Mahle pistons are not currently available and maybe will never be. We have made a large run of cast pistons that can be configured for any combustion chamber and any compression up to 10.5 to 1. The diameter is 90mm (1 mm over). We will have them available within 2 weeks. Cost will be very competitive. More info on our website later next week.

Ross pistons do seem to be good.

They are forged, though, so a good warmup is required,
as cold fit is a bit looser than a cast piston.

They use thin Ross rings.

So far, they are working great- in the race car...

I have a new NOS set of Hepolite bathtubs and a set of Kolbenschmidt flat tops. Both are 1st oversize (I need to confirm).

The guy who built me an M10 engine recently was able to get 9.5:1 Mahle pistons thru his conections in Germany. They were not cheap, though, and I doubt that he's willing to share his source. But, they are out there.

Yes we can machine the top to any combustion chamber shape and compression.
