Subject: Shifter Seal Question

Is it necessary to remove the transmission to change the shifter seal?

Are you talking about the selector rod seal? if so you do not need to remove the trans. It would be easier to do with the driveshaft dropped, but still not to bad. BTW I have a 5 speed, never done it on a 4.

Subject: the selector rod seals can be stacked

I personally have done it on a leaky selector shaft on a five speed I once had.

I think I did it twice ... so that leaves room for at least three seals in the cavity.

I used a crappy jack handle as a drift to slide over the selector shaft with all knuckles removed. All you do then is drive the seal in to flush with the tranny housing. I'd imagine that it's easier to do with the front section of the driveshaft loosened from the transmission-- I've only done it this way. My hands are big and I work on my back under the car (no lift) and you can't see what you're working on very well.

it's worth it.

removing the seal can cause scoring or scratching on the selector shaft with the tool that you're using and then no seal will work, the selector shaft will have to be replaced and certainly you will need to remove the tranny for that.

I have not heard it referred to as the selector rod seal but yeah that sounds like what I'm talking about.
