Megan and I were looking at trading in our Accord for a Civic hybrid but decided against. The Accord gets around 30mpg highway (+/- 2mpg) and the hybrids only get in the 40's to low 50's. The difference in cost of purchase was enough to break the deal. The hybrid would have had to get over 70mpg to even make it close to worthwhile based on driving ~15k miles a year.

Better things will come soon - like BMW 1-series Diesels

I've been hybrid research for more than 8 years now, and just attended the plug-in hybrid vehicle expo. I was amazed to see the public outcome and views, compared to even two-three years ago.

People are finding that the gas mileage is much better, and the overall operating costs are now much lower since gas has hit 4+ bucks a gallon. At one point, people couldn't justify the 4-8K markup of a hybrid over its lifespan while now they wish they jumped on the bandwagon sooner. Its not just mileage, but its also emissions that improve with PZEV (partial zero emissions) ratings.

I persuaded my folks to buy a prius, and selling their beloved volvo 850 turbo. They couldn't be happier with it, and now its hard to persuade them from buying all this prius paraphernalia!

what's not green about driving a 35-year old car besides lowly 20MPG and higher emissions? i'd be keen to learn more about the costs and environmental impact of driving a classic 4-cylinder car vs. a modern hybrid or econocar like a corolla. i'd like to buy a hybrid but i cannot afford one for my family, let alone any "new" car.

I had a coupon for a free oil change, so I brought the TDI Jetta Wagon to the dealer for the service. While I was there, I got to drive the new TDi Jetta with the DSG automatic gear box. WOW! 140 hp, 235 ftlbs. of torque! EPA of 44+ mpg. Very nice car.
Jen and I drove a Prius a few years ago as a rental car and I liked it too. It was faster than I thought it was going to be. Highway mpg was around 36 mpg. Around town it was great. The fit and finish was wonderful and there was plenty of space for 4 tall adults. Luggage space was a little tight, but not bad.
What we need is a 120D! or a 335D touring!
