for following his directive!

[From the State of the Union address, January 31, 2006]

"And here we have a serious problem: America is addicted to oil, which is often imported from unstable parts of the world. The best way to break this addiction is through technology. Since 2001, we have spent nearly $10 billion to develop cleaner, cheaper, and more reliable alternative energy sources -- and we are on the threshold of incredible advances.

So tonight, I announce the Advanced Energy Initiative -- a 22-percent increase in clean-energy research -- at the Department of Energy, to push for breakthroughs in two vital areas. To change how we power our homes and offices, we will invest more in zero-emission coal-fired plants, revolutionary solar and wind technologies, and clean, safe nuclear energy.

We must also change how we power our automobiles. We will increase our research in better batteries for hybrid and electric cars, and in pollution-free cars that run on hydrogen. We'll also fund additional research in cutting-edge methods of producing ethanol, not just from corn, but from wood chips and stalks, or switch grass. Our goal is to make this new kind of ethanol practical and competitive within six years.

Breakthroughs on this and other new technologies will help us reach another great goal: to replace more than 75 percent of our oil imports from the Middle East by 2025. (Applause.) By applying the talent and technology of America, this country can dramatically improve our environment, move beyond a petroleum-based economy, and make our dependence on Middle Eastern oil a thing of the past."

Two and a half years later, we get this from the White House:

"Today, I've issued a memorandum to lift the ban. With this action, restrictions have been cleared away. this means that the only thing standing between the American people and these vast oil resources is action from the U.S. Congress. Now the ball is squarely in Congress's court. Democratic leaders can show that they have finally heard the frustrations of the American people by matching the action I've taken today, repealing the ban and passing legislation to facilitate offshore exploration."

Mr. President, that was YOUR Directive. Well, don't go looking for relief at the pump for a few years...shall we say, six?

Delia

Does anyone know who put into law that there would be no drilling in these areas in the first place.

BUSH Senior did, that's who did! I think he should talk to daddy or blame him.

Gas under $1.00 when the daddy got in and when he left office over $1.75. Since W got in over $4.50 and counting and no movement during the Clinton years. I will give daddy Bush credit for knowing limitations, but his son said fuck you all!

Well they are open for drilling now, and congress ( most likely ) will not go along because they say that the oil coming on line in the years to come will not effect the price of oil. But they did try to release 10% of the strategic reserve today because a 3 day supply will bring oil prices down. ( I need a retard smiley here )

How can you guys/gals buy that lib bullshit.

Bottom line: the end of the oil era is in sight.
I wish there was more discussion about it's follow-up and more initiative to make that happen. The oil price won't fall much, if at all. Asia is demanding its share. Pump all you want in the polar region, it's only postponing the problems to our children, while we have the knowledge and intelligence today. Japan, Norway and Iceland are good examples of countries who think ahead, and much of the German car industry as well. The solution my country comes up with is tax fuel even more (the sonsabitches!), and in the US it's calling for more drilling.
Besides, you people shouldn't whine so much about your fuel price; it's still about the lowest in the world compared to GDP.
