Just thought you might enjoy some 2002 racers that I saw last weekend at Road America.

Also a couple of other really nice BMWs

I added a couple more cars above.

Also I admired this nicely put together M10 in an Elva I think. Maybe the experts here can comment on the appearant plug angle and the distributor block angle of this engine. Something special?

Here's a shot of the valvetrain I snapped in '06 at Road America. We spoke with the owner and he said Ireland built the engine...the might share info about the head / distributor housing. Nice to see so many '02 racers there this year. There was ONE '02 racecar there in '06. Wish I could've made it last weekend.

Thanks Skip,
Nice picture. I see now there is nothing unusual about the plug angle in the head, must just be angled boots.

Transmission looks like VW IRS transaxle installed upside down with U-joint conversion (from standard CV joint)!

Notice:
Drainplug now on top
Angled corners with (2) holes to accept std. VW pad type tranny mount(s)
Mount for starter closer to ground (normally upper RH side of car).
Extra gussets on case reflect heavy duty "Rhino" version offered for the "Thing". You can still buy these cases brand new for reasonable prices.

Sorry - I can't help it.

Aren't some sizes of the Hewland gearbox VW sourced? I have a vague recollection of that.

You are correct - but never available from the VW factory. They are mainly used in off-road applications. Other brands and designs have become available in the last 10 years (or so) due to all the high HP VW engines folks are building.

Back to the original post: excellent pictures!
