Subject: bouncy speedometer ??

my speedometer works fine until I get up above 80, then it starts getting bouncy. The faster I go the worse it gets, once I get above 90 it jumps between 10 MPH.
Be great when I get stopped by the FHP.

"Do you know how fast you were goin son?"

"Well officer either 80 or 110 I'm not sure, but I bet your gonna tell me"

Anyone ever experience this ??

Yep, same thing happens on my car too. It starts to get bouncy after about 50 mph, and it gets worse as the speed goes up.

Also, my odometer does not work, and I thought that the same cable runs both the speedo and the odometer ... maybe the two are related?

Subject: Better disconnect your speedometer cable -

- it only gets worse and will eventually break the speedo needle.

Could be your cable needs lube,

or the delicate magnetic coupling cup inside the speedometer has years of dirt and grit in it which causes friction. See figure #10 in the VDO gauge repair article at -

Subject: Yes! Avoid killing your speedo ...

... as guibop mentioned. The magnet wheel often gets loose on the speedo input shaft and moves toward the aluminum cup. If it moves enough to hit the cup, your speedo needle and return spring become instant garbage. The wildly swinging speedo needle is the sign of impending doom. Do Forum Search to find several posts on this topic, including diagnosis and repair instructions.
