Subject: 242 / 245 gear box?

UPS brought me another ebay impulse buy last night...

Getrag 245 5-speed overdrive, reportedly out of an '81 320i.

It's a 3-section transmission; the rear cover is stamped 245, etc., but inside the bellhousing near the input flange is stamped 242...

Searched the archives w/ no luck...

Any ideas? Production line change, converted 242, or have a bleedin' guess???

No pics yet, but will post after I clean it up.

Best,
Steve

I believe the 242 and the 245 share a front case. It's the "middle" section that holds the overdrive stuff. The 242 lacked this because it was the four speed for the 1977-79 320 cars.

You've got the right one. Now start the conversion!

Thanks ClayW - That was easy. Looks like I was getting my paranoia up for nothing.

Will do! I should have an Aardvark kit in my greasy hands by the end of the week.
