Subject: Is the breather hose vacuum control hose needed?

The valve cover breather hose on my stock '76 02 is properly connected to the metal pipe air cleaner. There is a little hose barb on that metal pipe on the underside of the air cleaner with no hose on it. The Haynes manual calls it a "vacuum control" but doesn't show clearly where is goes. Do I need to connect it and where does it go? Could this be causing the stinkyness (oily and rich exhaust smell) when the engine runs? A search of forums and archives doesn't specifically address this.

Its been decades since I looked at a stock 76. Are you sure you are not referring to the "secondary crankcase ventilation hose" depicted in this diagram?

I am doubtful the "stinkyness" is as a result of the tiny port off the filter assembly as opposed to some more direct source from the intake.

As depicted in the diagram, there seems to be a vacuum port attachment, yet I thought the tube was somehow connected to the carbon canister on the passenger fender apron. I do not believe the fitting actually controls any device. I do not have access to a manual at present, otherwise I would look it up. Bet you will find it there. Expect CD (Sorry he sold it!) may have the definitive answer!

either you seal/plug off the breather hose and intake
hose fittings,

or

install the vacuum/breather hose correctly.

YES - you'll get oil vapor stink into the interior
with an open system - and the motor will not run
correctly with any open holes.

Yes, the car is stock with the original Solex. It has an air pump (drive belt removed) and thermal reactor exhaust mainfold but only one vacuum hose to the distributor advance (i.e., no retard hose). There is no "red" or "white" electromagnetic valve per the diagram. I had thought it was a '76 CA emissions type but now believe it is a '76 "50 states". In any event, I will leave larger breather hose connected to air cleaner and connect a vacuum hose from the little breather connection to the carb body per the diagram. BTW, nice drawing! Thanks for the help.

I am in the process of "desmogging" with next steps to remove the air pump and thermal reactor. I have a used non-reactor exhaust manifold on its way. Will eventually replace Solex with Weber 32/36.

Mom has been wanting to drive the 02 since I got it in February - would be a nice Mother's Day gift, no? You all going to V@V?
