Subject: starter relay or wire problem?

Help.
I've got a 2002A 1975. Pertronix, new cap rotor and plugs, valve lash checked.
Initially had problems with stalling during idling and stumbling. Eventually cleaned out the carb passages (Weber 32/36) and float bowl and now it runs much better.

However, all of a sudden the starter won't turn over. The dash lights come on and the head lights work, so the battery is ok. The car can be started by bridging the hot battery cable to the starter wire terminal. The fuses all look good.

Replacing the ignition switch under the dash did not work. The car seems to have a starter relay (little square yellow thing?) under the dash. Could that be the problem?
Am I missing a wire connection somewhere?

Thanks for any advice. You guys have saved me more than a couple of times.
David.

The only starter relay there is resides on top of the starter itself. The relay under the dash is the starter lock out for when the transmission is in gear on an automatic. It won't allow the starter to engage when in gear.

If you're running a separate cable to the starter and it starts, check your positive and negative cable connections and clean them with a wire brush or trminal cleaner. I npect the cables themselves. The temporary battery clamps are bad news.

Also throw the battery charger on a trickle charge and have it load tested.

You are correct; automatics only had a starter relay, although i've no idea where it resides. I believe it's wired into a sensor which may be to ensure you have the gearshift in "park". So it could be that sensor?

Thanks guys,
You clued me into the problem. The shifter was not fully engaged in park. It's starting right up now.
Duhh.
