Subject: Diesel question

OK, my in-laws have an '05 VW Jetta TDI that they adore. Unfortunately it just died yesterday morning on them about a mile from their house. The TDI would not restart and required a tow. Their local VW dealer spent "all day on it" yesterday and has no idea. No trouble codes are displayed by the computer, and they are out of suggestions. A regional tech rep has been called.

My father-in-law did fill up the night before at a gas station about 1.5 miles from their house...so the car traveled 2.5 miles after the fill-up, with an evening parked outside in between starts. He has a receipt for diesel so we know he didn't put regular gas in it, unless the station screwed up and put gas in a diesel storage tank.

Any ideas? What could cause this to happen on a diesel? And don't tell me the spark plugs are bad. ;-)

THanks!

Those things have alot of electrical problems. Theres a few TDI forums around, so I suggest you ask there.

Basic diesel knowledge says you should check the fuel filters. Did it slowly lose power, or just die?

They are having MAF sensor problems, which VW is trying to fix. You could try unplugging it like alot of people do, but VW should have already tried that.

Get out on the message boards and read. That's your best bet.

Thanks Steve. Apparently it sputtered as if it was running out of fuel and then died. The dealer's usual tricks (MAF included, I'm assuming...we played that game with my wife's Golf 1.8T) did not fix the problem as they could not get it to start.

Thanks for the insight...I'll head to the Vortex and see if there's anything there amidst the rubble...

The older Mercedes diesels lugg and lose power when the filters need to be changed. It shouldn't be any different for a VW diesel. I have a few other ideas, but its basic stuff the dealer should have already checked.

Quite possible. We had several days of torrential, record-breaking rain around here just prior to the diesel purchase.

The dealer is now saying it's either the turbo or some kind of exhaust blockage...

Subject: Resolution!

The turbocharger failed. Not sure how, but it failed and when it did it restricted the exhaust, hence the stall/no start. First one VW has seen like that at least regionally...they brought all sorts of people in to see it as it was such an unusual failure.

Anyway, it's been replaced and all is well. Just wanted to close the loop.
