Subject: Crapped out Vacuum Advance... Can I plug it and redo timing?

Hi everyone, as some of you may know, I have been having a problem with a vacuum leak on my car causing to shut off at idle or run really rough. I haven't had anytime to work on it, but I found that the vac. advance on the dizzy isn't working. My question is can I plug this and reset the timing to make it run right. If this will work what would I have to do, advance it by how many degrees? I've done timing on small block chevy's before but never 02's, from what I remember there's pointer on the timing chain cover that's supposed to line up with the notch on the crank pully correct? If I were to advance it with the light, would the notch move to the left or the right of the pointer? Hope this makes sense, thank you.
