Is there certain places to splice and not to splice for CD players and gauges? My car has many demons as other forum members have seen in my many new posts...electrical is another one. If I turn the head lights on the tach drops and doesn't work. when the turn signal is on the electric fuel pump regulates with the blinking of the bulbs, the cd player (i didn't install) turns off an on for no reason, the AMP, Oil Pressure, and Temp aftermarket gauges fluctuate quite often at the drop of a hat. I've removed panels and there are gobs of wires, extra wires, spliced into all types of factory wiring. Would it be wise to get a higher amp alternator and battery and see if that fixes the issues? I don't know what these things draw. Any suggestions?

definitely first order of business is to get a bigger, better alternator.
then check ALL your grounds.
I'm terrible with electrical stuff, so i'll leave that part to the experts

Check everything. The easiest thing is to independantly fuse and run your CD player directly to the battery - only just don't forget to turn it off or you'll have a dead battery. So look at your grounds from the engine to the chasis, battery to chasis, turn signals to body, etc... behind the dashboard & instruments run your own new ground wires - two or three of them just to be sure. I'm pretty sure that everything will start to work again if you do all that. It's not fun but it's not really hard. email me if you have anyquestions off post

I had the same issue when I got mine... speaker wire used to jump between things all over the place. stuff wired to other stuff, stuff not working or working intermittantly. I got myself a wiring diagram. and sat down and started at the fuse box and traced everything down and eliminated all of the cruddy wiring section by section. It really wasn't that bad...it is actually a fairly simple system. Learned a lot too.

a ham-fisted PO's undocumented hack wiring job. I'd take all the extra (non factory stuff) and lay out a diagram on how you're gonna wire it, then put in new wiring one item at a time--and DOCUMENT WHAT YOU DID. The factory wiring is pretty logical and will suggest how to wire your extra stuff properly.
cheers

I agree, you wouldn't believe the mess under the dash! and another great thing is that the guy must have only had red wire...b/c it is all red wire spliced into everything. Some of the factory wire has not been spliced into but completely removed and then this garbaged added in way back tot he firewall...
On an E30 alternator, i'm loking at a 90amp one on ebay right now, will that be okay? Will the belts fit the same from an 02 or do I need different belts with that size altenator

Used, with no Voltage Regulator. But it's free (it would be nice if you paid the cost of shipping). It's got a urethane lower (small) bushing but would need the upper which you can buy easily online for >$10

For my setup, I built a passthough connector that plugs in between the hazard switch and the switch connector, that way I could pull +12 for gauges and tap into grounds and stuff, but not modify the car's wiring.
I tend to just go directly to the frame for ground anyway, especially with audio...

signals on or when I would apply my brakes until I put better ground strap on, one to the body and one to the engine. The one I had on looked okay but apparently it wasn't...maybe that's part of the problem..

1. Throw away the existing fuses.
2. Clean the fuse contact points in the fusebox with a fine wire brush or fine grit wet-or-dry. (A Dremel tool is perfect for this.)
3. Install new fuses.

I had 2 monster cables 1 running from the CD Player back to where an amp must have been and another running ot the trunk direct from the battery. No amp in the car, but the wires were both cut and just laying in the floor. Here is the really NEAT part...the gas tank has a leak, there was actually a pool of fuel around the tank, can you imagine if those cables would have contacted bare metal and sparked? KABOOM!!!
