Subject: What do you guys think about 1981 Porsche 911 Carrera's

I think they started using galvanized metal by this point in the production and it has a targa top and the turbo tail - not a very attractive color. A friend is interested in one but I don't know much about them.

What would you say it is worth if there is no rust and in very good condition. NADA states $12k - $14k. As it has four cams, is there anything else that he should look for?

Sorry for the o/t post but timing is key and I figured you all could/would provide the best insight.

Thanks in advance,

Roger

For 12-14K, it should be a super clean example with records and lots of service. Targa tops tend to leak. Rust should not be an issue unless it's been out for a long time or in the wetter states. The 78-83 3.0 SC motors is what Porsche guys usually call "bulletproof".

I had an 86 3.2 Carrera. It's the same block, punched out a little, and used Motronic FI instead of CIS. There is one cam per side. Do a compression check, and more importantly, a leak down test.

It was my first and last 911. Parts are made of gold.

Which years are the most desirable?

Had an '83 SC as my daily driver for over a decade. Fast, tight, and lots of fun. But the Carreras that were introduced in '84 have some important engine upgrades. If you buy an SC, you'll want to add a pop-off valve, which is a minor expense. For longevity, you want to upgrade to the hydraulic chain tensioners from the Carrera, which is a bigger job. Ideally, the current or previous owner will have done this already. If so, you're ahead of the game consideably.

and there is much to be said for that. Hoo boy....I know WAY TOO much about 911s. In general, having owned one, I can say the mystique is far bigger than the reality.

Any year can work for you. Early ones are the most expensive to buy and own. The 901 gearbox was too weak for the motor, especially first gear. The 915 gearbox (73-86) was a big improvement, but most of them are balky and quirky. Prolly stay away from anything before 73 unless you have VERY deep pockets. The 2.7 (73 to 78) is a good motor, but only if the original headstuds have been replaced. But it has the fussy CIS FI. The 3.0 motor (79 to 83) is known for it's longevity, but still used the CIS. The 3.2 (84 to 89) is a good package. After that, the prices go way up. Learn to work on it, plan on an engine drop, keep the oil topped up, and open your bank account wide. BTW, you check the oil with the engine running at operating temp...dry sump system. The 3.2 with the better oil cooler holds 12 quarts of oil.
