Subject: scary wheel noise

I am a total novice at this, so it could be general auto knowledge, but- last week, i noticed a faint noise coming from my front wheel. it sounds like a constant rubbing of metal on metal, but pretty quiet. its gotten louder over the past week, and I am worried. It isnt brakes or engine, definitley the wheel. Ideas? Is it immediatley dangerous? Expensive? Thanks-

Subject: Have ya checked yer brake pads recently? And are all caliper

pistons (there are 4 per caliper) retracting properly when you let off the brakes? A stuck piston can cause the pad to drag lightly on the rotor and make the sound you described...You can examine when you jack up the car to check the wheel bearings.

..JACK UP each front corner and hand spin each wheel to locate the noise and feel if each spins freely as well.

Stones can be lodged between the brake 'stone'sheild and disk making scrapping noises.

Seen it at some autocrosses when there is pea gravel on the surface and people go zipping around and suck up one of the rocks between the backing plate and the rotor. Sounds just awful!

Otherwise, it's time to start looking at rebuilding the essentials.
