Subject: 2001 Saab 9-5 Wagons?

Anyone know anything about these? My brother thinks that because I like to wrench on BMWs I know about every car ever made. I know GM bought them, not sure when or if they got any better or worse in terms of electricals, relaibility, etc.

Here is one of the cars he is looking at...

Thanks for any comments - or suggestions on a similar but better car.

Personally - I can't stand working on them. Most of the ones I've seen were dripping, oozing, leaking, oily, overpriced ugly, and built "weird" for the sake of weird - in the engineering sense. BMWs are 100 times easier to fix - even modern ones, from my own experiences.

The only Saab I liked, was an old roommate's 1974 "99". Like a 2002 built by a farm equipment company - but fun nonetheless. I never had to work on it, though. ;-)

Thanks Paul - I'll take your reply and the lack of other replies to mean he should stay away. Personally I don't like them but he thinks they are nice...

Family has owned saab since 91 so pre GM and still own that car as well as three other ones
91 9000s with 196,000 miles compression is still excellent only issue it has ever had was a heater core. Car carried us all over Europe and across the US, interior wise there are no rips in the leather headliner is still excellent. Great car
01 9-5 2.3T, this is my sisters car is really low miles have owned for over a year now and again no issues has driven down and back from WA to CO in winter and summer without issue. No oil leaks, great mpg decent power and very comfy ride
05 9-5 Aero, high performance version only issue it has had was the direct ignition cassette needed to be replaced at like 40K
99 9-3 Viggen limited production 1 of 400 imported in 99, is my car stupid amounts of power and torque steer ride quality is not that good but it rolls on stiffer springs and low profile tires. No rattles though and grins for miles.

I will comment on the oil problem or what is known as sludging on the newer cars most have not had the crank case vent system updated ie my viggen hadn't and it was dripping oil due to pressure out of a couple of gaskets. $57 dollars later and 1.5 hours under the updated kit was installed and leaking was fixed.

Personally I would go with a tad newer 9-5 than a 01 in that it was IIRC it was new year for that model so it has some quirks. Also the auto really hampers the engine, go with a manual...

Great cars though safety wise, fit and finish is excellent and they have surprisingly low resale value so good deals can be had. Furthermore the cars are usually purchased by older less adventurous drivers so it likely hasn't been driven hard, and most are serviced by the dealership.

In regards to weirdness I know personally the key in the middle is strange, yet it's there because a high percentage of accidents result in broken knee caps due to impacting a key in the ignition. Hence the relocation.

Test drive it and have it inspected and I think he'd be very happy with it.

FWIW Last year a guy drove his 88 900 to a million miles and saab gave him a brand new car
