In my opinion there's only two great car movies, Le Mans with Steve McQueen and Grand Prix with James Garner.
Between these two movies, which one do you think is your favorite.
(I have alterior motives for this poll question ;-))

I voted for LeMans. Great movie.

Gotta add Ronan to the mix though.

LeMans

Grand Prix

A Man And A Woman
(the original - there is a sequal 20/30 years later)
good '65 Mustang Rally, and the first GT40 footage!

Ronan

Italian Job
the 'current' edition - the original movie is junque!

The Driver (?)
with George C. Scott as a hired driver in a BMW 501 Convt.

....as for your poll question - both Grand Prix and LeMans
are #1 hits - turn-um up to -=" 11 "=- and rattle the windows

As much as I love the Porsches and Steve McQueen's coolness, I really believe it's Frankenhiemer's "Grand Prix" that's the best and certainly the more inspired of the two. The opening credits multiple images, the cast, including cameos by real racing drivers like Graham Hill, the nose-mounted cameras, special effects -- all of it were ground-breaking.

McQueen's effort five years later, took numerous creative cues from Frankenheimer's work. One of particular note is the heartbeat sequence at the beginning of "Grand Prix" and the green flag sequence in "Le Mans."

I saw "Grand Prix" in in a movie theater in 1968 with my dad. It was shortly after my mother died, and somehow, we really bonded watching that film on the big screen. He never forgot the experience -- neither did I.

For you guys, it seems to me, the real question might be, "do you want to hang out with Garner or McQueen?"

Delia

For some reason, I haven't seen either one.

I like the "Italian Job" remake, the original "Transporter" with the 7-series and another old movie I cannot find reference to:

It was a drag race movie featuring a "no-name" kid driving a Willy's coupe by stealing a Hemi engine from a police car. Same movie may start with the driver totalling his freshly done black car on a twisty road in CA??. I saw it years ago on TBS (Turner).

Another pretty good "car" movie is "The Seven Up's" with Roy Scheider.

"Duel" with the Dodge 4-door battling the trucker is also good (Spielberg's first).

Ronan is right up there for the unbelieveable chase scene but I've got Bullitt sitting on my kitchen counter ready to watch tonight with my 14 year old son. I'm doing my best to indoctrinate him to the wide world of automobiles!! Driver safety school is in the not to distant future as well as many hours of driving with dad before he climbs behind the wheel on his own.
Bullitt is my all time favorite when it comes to car chases!

Not sure how we're defining "car movie" but if movies with great chase sequences are included I also ad a couple of the movies from the "Bourne" franchise: Bourne Identity, Ultimatum, etc...

Well its was a poll for two movies. Maybe it needs to be re worded or we need a new poll for all the car movies listed here.

How is this on topic? In your opinion, there are only two great car movies? I do not share your opinion, although I like both films and have met several people involved with the Frankeheimer production. Rather than hint at your [u]lterior motives, it would have been easier if you told us what they were. Then maybe we could better analyze your poll question.

What makes a great car movie anyway? Cars in movies? You never explained the reasons for your two choices.

P.S. No one mentioned Barry Newman in Vanishing Point, then there's Two Lane Blacktop not to mention countless others with chases or races in them.

Scott never posts anywhere but the main forum. We forgive him because he is, after all, our Fearless Leader.

And besides, "If you're not first, you're last." (That has nothing whatsoever to do with anything - but it's a pretty cool quote from The Legend Of Ricky Bobby, the Greatest NASCAR Car Movie, ever made.)

You are correct that everyone is incorrect - but they (we) are incorrect for the incorrect reasons. To correct the incorrectness, one simply should not forget the Charlie Sheen classic - "The Chase," featuring ScottNC's favorite ride (a BMW model number that begins with, dare we say in front of ScottNC - a "3").
