Subject: Need help with oil change products...

I would like some knowledgeable insight as to what type of product to use with the following: I just got a 1974 2002 tii (RHD) with 42k original miles on the odometer; what type of oil and what weight should I buy as well as what type of filter?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Max

from your dealer, or cheaper from "Blunt" on this forum, or your local imports parts places.

Thank you for the great input, one question though:
Why such a heavy weighted oil for a car that only has 42k miles?

20w/50 because that's what BMW specifies -

use BMW # 059 oil filter, or MANN brand
'other' brand filters blow apart due to low burst pressure
cannisters. Your car developes up to 125+ psi during cold start/warm-up

lubricate your throttle piviots at every oil & filter change

Does he need to know about ZDDP level in his brand of oil or is this only a concern during break in? Someone with more knowledge then me can explain what API rating is best for our engines.

Well it looks like its up to me. You want and oil brand that has an API of SL.

SM — Current — For all automotive engines presently in use.

SL — Current — For 2004 and older automotive engines.

SJ — Current — For 2001 and older automotive engines.

I am breaking in an engine so have been using redlines engine break in oil to add back the zinc. After break in I will use an oil that has the SL rating.
