Subject: Alternative ignitions or add-ons?
|
|
In a recent post alternative ignitions were briefly mentioned, including some use of a points-style Toyota distributor and Mega Jolt. The archives reveal that Pat A. has discussed using a later e21 pointless distributor and module. http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,57/page,viewtopic/t,148717/ MikeS has discussed his penchant for CD (Capacitive Ignition Nothing to do with he sold it). Mike, what did you do about your Delta?
I was wondering about the other relatively well known products: Mallory, Accel and/or Jacobs. Specifically, does anyone use Jacobs' products on their M10? Advantages or disadvantages? My soon to be member of the family is a retired hot rodder and he is interested in giving me a bunch of this stuff he ran (years ago) on his many projects from modified model A's to tri power 427's. I do not wish to play with these products if the gains versus the hassles are negligible.
Your personal experiences and thoughts are appreciated!

ignition systems--I went to my basement stash and found a nice Mk 10C (found at a swap meet a few years ago), installed it in my '69 and it works just fine. The two dead ones will lurk in my basement 'till one of my electronics buff friends can troubleshoot 'em for me. They're built on circuit boards (not potted) so parts can be replaced with a soldering iron.
While Delta's been out of business for many years, I know there are several similar units on the market today--offered with or without something to replace the dizzy's points. I personally favor using the original points in such a system for two reasons: first the points last (almost) forever since they only carry 12 volts (not plug voltage) and second, if the CD unit craps out, you can switch it off, revert to the original ignition--and get home.
The nice thing about any high energy ignition system is that they will fire plugs that are all crapped up witih oil deposits, mis-gapped, badly worn or flooded with gas. And in cold weather they will generate more voltage when the battery is weak than a stock system will at full battery voltage. But I'm still a little leery of magnetic/photocell replacements for good old points...probably because I haven't tried one yet. And yes, I admit to being a Luddite in certain areas!
cheers

I have used the Delta Unit and an Allison photo electric unit. The Delta unit died within a few months and I could not get the thing to work even when I set it to bypass the unit. I do not think the units were that well protected from the elements. As I mentioned in my original post, I have been offered a bunch of Jacobs and other brands for the price of a few drinks. I did not wish to waste my time, absent a few glowing endorsements.
At present the engine runs fine with BP5ES plugs gapped at .045 with big fat Penske coil. I am sort of like MikeS, why mess with what works? But every once in a while something works better! I am from MO!

I'm running the MSD 6A unit, with Blaster 2 Coil, hooked to a tii mechanical distributor outfitted with a PerTronix Ignitor. Set-it and forget-it reliability, and superlative spark throughout the full (and then some) rpm range, easily able to deal with the Schrick 304 cam and dual DCOEs setup. Very happy...

The MSD 6 and Pertronix setup is about as economical and bullet proof as can be found. I have this setup with a Motorsport 300 cam and 45 DCOEs. I am using a Jacobs coil, but factory coils work fine, too. The only thing I would add is that the cap and rotor still function as God intended them to, so periodic replacement is necessary- perhaps even more frequently, because of the extra power.
Tom- would you pls advise which plugs and gap you are running? _________________ Chris B.
