Subject: Speedometer Markings

I searched but couldn't find anything in the archives, though I could swear I saw someone post this answer.

What markings on the back of the speedometer indicate which differential gear ratio that it's matched to? I have a `76 2002 with (I'm pretty sure) a 3.64:1 ratio.

Which speedometer should I be looking for?

Thanks in advance.

3.45:1 diff -- W=1.24 speedo
3.64:1 diff -- W=1.297 speedo (W=1.30 is close enough)
3.90:1 diff -- W=1.39 speedo ('76 49-State 2002)
3.91:1 diff -- W=1.393 speedo (E21 320is LSD)
4.10:1 diff -- W=1.4 speedo (1.461 calculated)
4.11:1 diff -- W=1.4 speedo (1.465 calculated)
4.38:1 diff -- W=1.559 speedo (calculated)

Great info. The Admins should add this to the FAQ section.

How about knowing how it is determined, then you never need to scratch for the answer!

It is the number of cable turns per mile. So take your driveshaf turns per mile and divide by the speedometer gear ratio of the transmission (2.5:1).

(Easy hint, engine rpm in direct drive gear / 2.5 at 60mph).

Thanks! Exactly what I needed!

so my euro speedo (KPH) says W = 0.84, so what does that mean? (PS - I think it's orignal to the 67ti, so should be 3.90) Thank you, Roger

Using the mph to kph conversion factor of 1.62 results in a W of 1.36 which is in line with the others.

Cool, appreciate the conversion factor.

Once I have this information 3.90:1 Diff=1.39 speedo. . .how do I figure out what part number I need for the replacement cable. My 76 has a single cable not upper/lower like some have. I found a part number of
62 12 1 350 977 . . not sure if this is right or not. . any help would be appreciated. . .

62 12 1 350 977 is right, unless you upgrade to a 5 speed, in which case you'll need the slightly longer automatic-car cable (62 12 1 351 720).
