Subject: Rear end lock-up...cause help??

Hi All,

After taking Gracie my '75 2002 for a little drive yesterday, while reversing back into the garage, the rear end locked up momentarily.

I was able to put the car back in first and go around the block a couple of times with no problem, but the lock up has me worried.

I do have some rear end noise, mostly thumping while the car is in gear after I take off the gas.

I recently drained the old diff fluid and replaced with Red Line hoping that would help the noise issue.

The previous owner replaced the diff about 2 years ago...did he install another bad one?

What else could cause the rear wheels to lock up like that?

Thanks,

lach

TAKE THE DIFF COVER OFF and inspect for loose bolts!! I had this exact thing happen and it was one of the ring gear bolts loose in the diff case, getting wedged between the ring gear and the bottom of the case. I discovered the problem when the bolt head punched a hole in the case and drained all the fluid out! Do this TODAY! ;)

Nothing last forever. Next best thing: lifetime warranty?

by the way, the one loose-in-the-bottom-of-the-case bolt was not the only loose one! several others were on their way out of their little threaded homes...

As advised , take cover off, mine locked up and everybolt had fell out , it was amazing the last one had lodged between the gears, fortunately I was stopped and when I went to go , well ...............

There was never any noise , just clunk! I believe the PO had been in there and never retorqued or loctited the bolts. I got a new rear end for 100.00

Will do...obviously drain the diff first, correct?

Any other words of wisdom, and thanks!

You can just unbolt the back cover and get ready to catch the oil when you break the gasket seal.

It could also be the spider gears telling you they are about to die. Mine finally let go 2 weeks ago. I could drive in a straight line, but the diff would clunk like hell at the slightest bend.

Best bet, pull the cover and have a look. Beaner7102
