I was ~just~ waiting for this.
It's 1974 ALL OVER AGAIN. Let's see...does my car have odd or even plates? If it's Tuesday I can wait in line to buy my 5 gallons of gas.
The crap I love is how they "justify" their reasons for wanting to drop speed limits back to the double-nickle or maybe lower. "An SUV owner could save upwards of $787 dollars per year by driving slower, a mid-sized pick up truck would save around $500, and a small car driver would save about $230 dollars."
Gee, I have the fortitude to drive smaller cars and yet I'll ONLY benefit 1/3 compared to that of the big 'ol SUV driver? That sounds ~real~ fair! Hey! Here's an idea. Leave the damn speed limits alone and force those people in the big 'ol SUVs into more fuel efficient vehicles. Why not drop the speed limits for the less efficient vehicles so they can save money. Do you think they will stay in the slow lane?
Hell, let's just drop the speed limit to 25mph world-freakin-wide! Then we could have all the police writing tickets, the extra revenue could go to fixing the damn roads into perfectly flowing, smooth thoroughfares, and then maybe, just maybe, I could actually drive from point A to point B through the Bay Area at an ~average~ speed of 25mph. Even with 65mph limits, I do good to average 24mph for my commute.
It's 1974 all over again.
Maybe Detroit will get a clue and start building better/smaller cars?
Have you seen the TV ads for new cars? MPG is all the buzzword. 30mpg is some magical number now. My 1972 BMW gets 26 to 28mpg. It's taken the big three 35 years to finally surpass that 30mpg mark?

according to my 45-min commuter mom, bay area speed "limits" have been dropping as the gas price goes up. people are turning into conservationizers naturally.... ;) _________________ - Rob S.
