Subject: quick Q: spray adhesive or brushable glue with door panels

I am starting to mount the panels to aardvark racing's plywood backing and was wondering what is better and less messy?
he suggests spray adhesive, but I noticed that someone mentioned here brushable glue. Which is better and easier to use?
Thanks

I like the spray stuff - but it can be messy - so be careful, use lots of latex gloves so you don't get adhesive on fingers - then on the vinyl. change gloves often. Brush on seems to work well also.

I recommend a test patch - if you're using store-bought vinyl - some adhesives can dissolve the foam on the back of the vinyl and make it curdle and wrinkle up - ruining your whole day. The current elephant skin CS trunk vinyl doesn't react well to too much 3M adhesive. When used in thin coats and allowed to dry between layers - it's alright - but too wet/thick ruins the vinyl backing.

HTH!

I recently redid my driver's door panel w/ Aardvarc's wood panel and I used contact cement. It's easier to control where it goes and worked out very well. Dave Varco had told me that it would work well with his panels.

I used 3M 90 spray adhesive, worked great but it's expensive.

I am very tempted to do it this way. Do you care to share what brand did you use? tube? can? application?

I'm such a noob and Paul is scaring me with all the gloves on/off thing!

I will be using a used set of door panels. I cleaned them and they are really coming out nice. Also the Mylar is on the way from Bob Cole...I will post pics and may by a DIY as I go along if someone is interested.

Thanks

I used a hot glue gun.

3M 80 Rubber and Vinyl adhesive the adhesive is neoprene based giving the adhesive a heat resistance of over 200F. This is all important in attaching headliners and other interior vinyl parts. The Spray 80 uses a controlled lace spray pattern, not a hair spray type particle spray. This allows the user to very precisely put the adhesive exactly where he wants it. Spray 90 is best suited for Formica and other laminates, it does not have the heat or the plasticizer resistance of Spray 80.
Spray 80 runs from $15-25 per can, depending where you buy. The product has 150 square feet coverage per can. This should be enough to cover about three doors. Spray both surfaces, wait till dry to the touch then place the parts together. Get it correct, or it will be very difficult to separate the parts.

Hot melt adhesive would probably work well but they are also affected by heat in the car and plasticizers. FYI plasticizers are the oils and chemicals in vinyls and rubbers that make it soft a supple. It affects the adhesives over the long term and more quickly when the temp increases.

Two links below, one to 3M bonding systems the other specifically for 80 Rubber and Vinyl adhesive. Any other 3M questions just ask, been doing this a long time. Don

Why would you use glue on door panels ? I used a staple gun. Had to use some vinyl as a spacer because I couldn't fins short enough staples. Staple them just like the factory did. Only place I used spray glue was where I glued a layer of pergo sound deadner over the card before I put the skins on. As far as the mylar kits go, good luck. I ended up buying chrome tape from local parts house. Cheap , and you will screw it up a few times. I gave up on making it on one piece on pre 74 panels and just did it in pieces.

I used v&S 1081 spray from ramaudio.com this time. I used the 3M 80 before & it was fine but I think I like the V&S a little better. While you're at it you can get some ensolite from ramaudio & pad the other side of the panel.

Sorry it took me a while to answer - but I used DAP Weldwood Contact Cement, as others have mentioned above. It's always worked well for me. I also ground-down regular staples (in groups of 4-5 at a time) so they were shorter and placed staples in all the original locations. Who says ' 02ers tend to be a little anal.

I think if I don't glue the middle parts it will look saggy. I will also use the staples of course. The padding seems alright. The Mylar was recommended by a few people here (prism graphics . com) and they said it should be good. Either way, it will be a PITA I know!
