Subject: engine build questions???

hey everybody I just got a 292 cam from IE, and I wanted to check with somebody that might have one, I wanted to ask if I might need to get new valve springs, as in the duel springs for the longer and faster rpm lifting. Also with that degree of cam do you think I should upgrade anything else valve-train wise besides the rocker retainers to replace springs, and does anybody know of a site where I might find new oem springs if they can take the lift and rpm. I do not plan on very high rpm driving the worst would be a good autocross.

thanks for your time, I hope this is enough info, if anymore is needed just let me know.

Kyle

i got the 292 re-grind with stock valve springs just has the IE oversize eccentrics, i went with their stainless valves, stock intake size but 1 over on the exhaust but thats not necessary unless your really building up for performance, everything else in my head is stock and i do run a full autrocross season plus its my daily driver, its a fun set up cuz rite at 3k the motor just opens up and takes off.

www.bavauto.com, great supplier for many parts quick shipping

I would ask IE what springs and retainers to use with that cam. They would know. My head has a Schrick 304 with Crower titanium retainers and double springs.

In Chardon hugh? I'm in Willoughby. Not too far away.

Yea, I would love to see your project harv, mines not much right now, but when the parts are there and I have the time to spend I'll get it done. But while I look for a shell donor with clean title, I can build the engine at school. I went and asked IE and they just said that either the oversize ec. or the lash caps would work. I got the oversize ec, with my order so that works out along with a boatload of bearings. I may change valves but I have a nice new oem set that I think I will put in, I just want it to pull hard, I have solex phh side-drafts, full gasket rebuild and lots of suspension work to do. I might just start a project blog with pics if I have the time.

thanks for the help guys.

Eric Kerman says that anything larger than the stock intake (46mm) is a waste until you are over a Schrick 316 cam.
I wonder who makes IE's cam? Isky?

Hey John,
got any part numbers?

The real question on whether it's ok is- How fast will you spin?

Stock will hold together to 6800+, and the IE cam isn't that much more
aggressive than stock. So if you don't wind past 6500, I bet you'll be fine.
It sounds terrible to say, but if you're wrong, all
you'll do is break a rocker, and that's not a really big deal.

Well, I wouldn't necessarily install billet rockers at this point - but I broke a rocker with rather lousy results - a piece of rocker got under a lobe of the cam and punched a nice hole into the waterjacket. Scratch one brand new race head.

Anyway, my advice - change the springs to dual springs, they're are cheap and you should be changing the springs anyway at this point, even if changing to new stock springs. If you are taking the valves out anyway, what's the big deal? At your stage of tune and use I'd personally just leave the stock rocker retaining springs in, I wouldn't bother changing to locks on a street car. A failed bolt in one of my rocker locks allowed the rocker to move, which is what caused it to break and ruin my head, so the rocker locks are not without their own risk.

I have an Ireland cam, a welded 316 version that they don't seem to sell any longer, it came in a Webcam box. Nice cam, needed oversize eccentrics when it was advertised as not requiring them. Ireland sent them to me, so I was very happy with it all.
