Subject: Centering 5 speed tranny in tunnel - necessary?

The E21 5 speed tranny is bolted to the motor and I am just about to put in the tranny bracket, shift tower, driveshaft, etc. The tranny sits very close to the drivers side of the tunnel. Is this a big deal for driveshaft alignment? I can lever it over and bolt it in a more centered position with the bracket, but does that put undue stress on the tranny bracket?

Any minor tweaks to the centre should be done when aligning the whole drive train. If the engine is in it's original position (ie you didn't remove it) then my guess is that levering the trany to centre it will actually result in the opposite happening. Then aligning the driveshaft will will be a real bitch or just not possible since the rear diff is your other fixed point.

kris, ive had both my motors out and back in the car and neither one has the tranny perfectly centered in the tunnel. i dont believe the tunnel to be symmetrical. while admittedly i only have 1500 miles on my M2 i have no vibrations or odd noises. my 69 has a lot more miles on it and its fine too.i aligned them both the same way. i was more concerned with deflection in the guibo than whether it was centered in the tunnel

What I've found is that the transmission's so big, you'll be lucky
to find a place where it doesn't rub something or other.
When you do find that sweet spot, there really isn't any wiggle
room.
So far, driveshaft side- to- side alignment's not been a problem for me either.
Vertically, you do have to pay attention.
Also, if you're not really cozy up in there,
it's the first indication that the transmission is hanging too low.
