Subject: Lowering springs

After participating in a few drives at V@V it became apparent that my car could use a few improvements in handling. I'm looking for recommendations comparing these three spring brands. H&R Sport Springs, Eibach Pro Kit and Bav Auto Lowering springs. Thanks

I think the general consensus is:

H&R Sport Springs (pretty damn stiff) , Eibach Pro Kit (stiff) and Bav Auto(kinda stiff)

Then there is the Ireland Engineering stage 1 springs that I have heard good things about.

less than 1/2 inch, but offer a good handling improvment without being very stiff. Not a bad compromise for a stock-ish 02. I have them with Bilstein HDs and 185/14 yokohamas. Handles very well but still comfy for long rides or crappy city pavement.

consider the ireland stage 2's if you want to go low and firm but not jarring

Subject: Coupla points about lowering springs...

If you have a 73-76 car, you can lower it about an inch by fitting stock springs from a 68-72 car. Later cars have taller springs due to Federal bumper height requirements. This is independent of the spacer rings fitted to all US cars.

I've been running H&R springs for about a year on my 73--lowers the car about an inch plus so it's about the same height or a little lower than my '69 with stock springs. Not too stiff (paired with Bilstein HDs), no clearance or bottoming problems either. Car corners a lot flatter too--I have before and after pictures from autocrosses to prove it!

cheers
mike

Frank
I have older Suspension Technique springs on the blue car which lower it quite a bit (have to lift it up to get a jack under subframe), ST sway bars (22/19) and new Bilstein Sports (not near as stiff as they used to be) and I like it. You saw how it sits

The panel truck has H&Rs on it and it sits pretty low but only weighs about 1600 lbs so I suspect would bring you down lower. That is what Aubrey Hall (Chamonix 71 that was on Sunday drive has on his)

BTW Watch out for a Black Toyota Avalon passing through Albany this afternoon My daughter is heading to Warrensburg to work at a summer camp up there :)

I'll second the ST recommendation-
a nice compromise between stock and floppy
and stiff and dentally expensive.

I have a set of brand new springs from BAVAUTO you can have if that is what you decide on. BAVAUTO gave them to me at last years event.

I can bring them to you next week if Duchess is ok to make the trip or for us to leave her.

How stiff are the Ireland Stage 2's, compared to H+R's or Eibach's?

Watch the BravAuto springs (B&G, Germany) they lower around 1.75". I think I would have liked around .5" less.

I agree with Mike. I have H&R springs with Bilstein HD's on my 69.. Very comfortable ride, not stiff at all, no problem at all if you want to daily drive with this setup.

i cant honestly answer that. ive driven 02's with h&r's and bilstein sports and from memory they arent that different but its been a couple years.. maybe a little more firm. but the thing i like is the linear spring vs. progressive. ive always liked linears better. i just feel like i know what my car is going to do.
kweebs and myself took it on a 4 hour drive a few weekends ago and he commented on how comfortable the car was so they arent that bad at all

Is there a way to drop the front a little bit?

Springs pads, maybe?

Any other methods?

spring pads arent real thick in the front. assuming your spacers are on top if you have them you can cut a coil if they are linear. some frown on this but ive done it.
